A conditional severance package is pretty standard stuff in a contract for white collar employees. I work at a startup, and if I'm terminated involuntarily, my company will pay me a few months' salary. But if I violate the non-dis

But the graph only shows YTD losses, right? If you make the 2021 graph 3 times larger to compensate for the roughly 1/3rd of the year we've seen so far[1], it looks like more than a fluke than just 2020 alone. Both 2020 and 2021 s

It's almost universally accepted that covid-19 is separate from, and significantly more destructive than seasonal influenza viruses. I don't think mainstream virologists and epidemiologists have changed their minds after the past

That's a model I'd be interested in working under. It's different for everyone, but I find onboarding most efficient in person, and long-term work most enjoyable fully remote.

What percentage does Roku take? I wasn't aware that they were in the same rent-seeking game as the other app stores. They do talk about their "Platform Revenue," but it seems that's mostly generated from ads.

It can be pretty hard to get, for example, visa sponsorship. A pariah company might be the only option which allows some people to meet their goals.

My current team follows a very traditional scrum model with a heavy emphasis on story pointing, but my previous one didn't like estimation as much, so we switched to more of a kanban flow while retaining some scrum rituals like a triwe

I've actually known people who, when required to change their password, would change it 5 times in a row, then back to the original password in order to keep using it.

Treadmills make exercise a more viable option when it’s raining outside, you don’t want to worry about getting mugged at 11PM, or just don’t want to get dressed to go out. People who exercise more are often healthier, and health has all sor

Hmm, it's an Electron app, so it could be cool to be able to click a button on a theme site which launches an instance of VS Code with an already-applied theme, similar to Theia[1]. Of course, I'm sure this would take longer than

While the digital nomad lifestyle is attractive, I'm always bemused by people on HN who are concerned about burnout, but also don't even seem to consider the non-coastal US. It's a less drastic option than leaving the country

These days the Kotlin DSL is treated as a first class citizen and you can find examples for most common tasks in either language. But Groovy is pretty easy to pick up too, you definitely don't need to know it before you start using it

I think the idea is that Google allegedly prioritizes pages by user dwell time, the idea being that if someone spends 10 minutes on your page, it's more relevant than another page where the user only spends 5 seconds before closing the

I don't think it's especially difficult to find a job as a developer within eight months, but you'd be giving up your current job as a fallback. You might not feel like you can walk away from an offer that's good, but no

Well, from my experience at Fortune 500s, they do encounter these problems, but they're supported by internal IT departments. As developers (I just assume everyone on HN is one by default), we aren't really the intended audience.
