Especially given pg's comments on education in 'Hackers and Painters' (which I just finally read). Yeah. Why on earth aren't we solving this? It's because it's not just hard (as in hard math, or hard code, or hard sell) but it's actually ve

Maybe you don't want them knowing your phone number to call you back with job calls or whatever. (Of course, there are ways around that too.)

Google is (believe it or not) working on being more accessible to customers, but no, right now, there isn't a number she can call. It's sad that people like your mom are disappointed, and there are plenty more like her out there, but callin

I use Python mostly, and I was asked this in an interview question (shortly after being asked if I could enumerate the differences between 2.6 and 3, when I said 'quite frankly no, I'm building a real world app and focused entirely on 2.6 a

Looks like writers who put effort into pages and then left Mahalo will basically get nothing, having expected to get something. Not good!

If you're hacking on a real project where do you get solid scalability experience? Unless you hit gold and, say, create a social network that explodes like wildfire... I got the impression the author had a strong practical sysadmin backgrou

Start coding the flickr mashup and keep your mind open during the process. It'll morph - you'll see something you can do. Other advice in this thread is sound on the general idea creation process - I would also add talk to people! Talk to p

There is a public train service (Caltrain) that runs from San Francisco downtown (4th and King) to the Stanford campus (Palo Alto station). Renting a car is advisable if you're going to spend any significant time in the Bay Area but if you

I just hope AOL starts paying all TC writers the ridiculously low monkey writer rate that it pays Weblogs writers. Ooh, and TC posts now get entered into the digg voting ring too!

I'm seeing more and more of these sites/solutions spring up but none of them seem to really work. Why? My thoughts: Partly an issue of signal to noise / matching, finding the right person in the first place. Partly frustration at unsuitable

This is my thinking. Sadly they are not particularly hackery and have flown 5500 miles to see me, not hang out with other people. :) hopefully I shall be there for at least a bit though.

Working as intended. Of course, the fun part is when you break up after a long relationship where your social circles are very mixed. You run the risk of losing all your friends. Which sucks.

This is something we're actively working on, you'll be glad to hear. After all, if we're launching an OS that's Chrome-on-Linux with huge memory leaks, we're screwed. ;)

A lot of this essay reminds me of the beginning of a startup. When days are long and sleep is optional and sparks are flying and people expect you to have cleaned the toilet because you've been in all day. (Except you've been sleeping, beca

The part that really tuned my brain anti-Groupon in this article was: Groupon sold consumers a $13 Posie’s credit for $6, and then sought to keep the entire $6. I mean, that's a 100% cut with the business getting nothing. If that's seriou

This is why I love Hacker News. Similarly, if anyone has any comments to pass on to the Chrome team, I can oblige; although comment is welcome on our mailing lists too, of course. And.. fight!

The item they're selling for $13 could be a low/zero margin product usually used to bait further purchases or tips. Another issue they noted was people not tipping as if they had paid $13, but tipping as if they had paid $3.

Well, the basic economics of giving away too many coupons is definitely the core of the problem, but it looks like Groupon aggravated it somewhat. By taking a high cut and targeting discount-minded (rather than repeat-custom-minded) cliente

You could start with some 'safe' low-bar jobs to get a feel for it, like eLance or similar (back in the day I did some eye-opening work for clients through rentacoder and a British freelancing site). The experience may be worth more to you

Next step, grab a corpus of HN posts and do some text crunching to generate suggestions. (or you could 'borrow' Feross' code, which is not condoned by Google - posts on the Interwebs say Google Suggest's "API" is not for public use - and no
