Oh god. I hated this cover when I got it at work. Wired just didn't consider its female readership at all with this cover.

Making sure a PM on the product reads your blog post isn't about optimising the title and having buzzwords like graduate. Think about being in the PM's shoes and where you would be looking for coverage and posts and so on on your product. H

It's entirely because they must be making a killing off their paid-for app and don't want you to offer a free alternative. How horrid.

Thank you for sharing and I hope it all works out for you. It's refreshing that you clearly understand your situation and are working with it. I remember you from another thread on learning programming -- keep perservering and I am sure the

Good luck @limedaring! You know me, but to weigh in: I am XX, applied three times (once as solo founder), got one interview, didn't get into YC, found my way to the Valley (from the UK) anyway. I intend to apply again in future if the star

Without putting my linguist hat on (in the middle of a hack day) my gut feeling is the 'newspaper'ness of the title. "Entity Verbs Noun" is fine if it's an impartial style report, but "Entity Verbs My Noun" is only good if it is a continuou

As a native British English speaker the title feels wrong to me, despite common practices. Manchester United Win Football Game = fine TfL Kill Puppies = ok, I suppose TfL Kill My Apps = No, they killed your app.

After a couple of weeks in Mountain View without a car I was going seriously stir crazy though. It's a suburb, you get what's on the tin.

There are a fair few, but I don't run into other Brits that frequently in either the startup or work scenes. If I had to put a number on it, about 2/100 of the people I've met are British like me, 3-4/100 Aussie, 2-3/100 Singapore, and 10-2

It depends on your situation. I pay $1850 (could have been $1700 but we changed rooms) for a 3 bedroom fully furnished house in Mountain View, with our landlord staying about 1 week per month in the guest bedroom (third bedroom is a study).

Belated reply, my knowledge for the US side is from threads on HN, which have greatly exaggerated the process if it's true that you can do it all online in a few minutes.

Depends how you define 'failed' -- I spent about 20 months (and all my money, and some other people's) on a startup that has ultimately gone nowhere, but has taken me to some fantastic places and will undoubtedly be part of the reason I suc

Nice start and a good reaction to the information overload of book recommendation threads :) A few comments: - Zooming on image covers seems pointless to me (is it just me?) - I'd like to see some kind of indicator of usefulness/relevance o

As with all NLP/machine learning, it's trivial to do if you know the tools and already have the data -- but pretty difficult to do well.

The interesting thing is how the real thing doesn't necessarily follow all the advice, yet worked anyway. I don't think it tells a story, which is the primary tip. Of course, maybe there isn't a story you can really tell in a sentence or le

Google handles email for many companies and even personal email accounts for people in a variety of jobs. Chance of some of that being insider information is pretty high IMO. Google also has a corporate search appliance that may be used in

Really surprised that the UK ranks 16th on 'Starting a Business' and the US ranks 8th. From what I know, it takes a lot longer, costs more, and tends to involve actual lawyers to open a business in the US. In the UK, I did it all online for

I totally agree on the latter point. Before you code anything, as your primary goal here is making money, get an Adwords voucher and see if you can get traffic to your site from ads. If people are clicking, then there's probably something t
