I don't mean to be condescending, but since you just learned about emacs-nox... If you haven't already, try tramp mode to edit files in containers and VMs. It also lets you edit local files using sudo. There's also a docker

I tell emacs to create all of the files in "~/.backups", and it names them using the full pathname with "/" replaced with "!". So "~/foo/bar.txt" -> "!home!username!foo!ba

I won't defend the automatic backup file, because it annoyed me, too. But it's easy to disable or have them created somewhere else, which is more than you can say for most software lately.

Which part of my post was being an ass? Sorry, but I experienced first hand Firefox's memory leaks not being taken seriously. This "bitflips" news is just released, but I fully expect anybody complaining about Firefox crashe

Firefox has a long history of denying problems, blaming the user, and fixing the issue years later. It used to be memory usage, now it's crashing.

Yeah, most of us absolutely are not getting our money back. The importers pay the tariffs, and they might get a refund, but it's unlikely they can distribute the money back to the people who they passed the price increase onto. Imagine

They didn't have to rule on it because there's already precedent that tariffs that shouldn't have been collected have to be repaid.

Not to detract from the Show HN entry, but I made this back in 2012 to play with 3Delight's API and implicit surfaces: https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/56307994 The one posted to HN is better in several ways,

I don't think that example works. Theoretically a person who read and memorized a book and then typed out copies for people would be violating the copyright, but so few people can do that, and it's so cumbersome that it just doesn

Exactly! The problem isn't this toy example. It's all of the more complicated cases where this same type of disconnect is happening, but the users don't have all of the context and understanding to see it.

I can't disagree that they have a moat, but it's a hard problem and if it were as easy as you say somebody would be disrupting them already to get a share of that $24T. Just dealing with fraud is a major problem in itself.

I don't see what you're getting at with respect to writing bindings. The whole point of using "static" in that way is to prevent people from using it outside of the file. If you need to call a static function (inline or

I have mixed feelings about .Net. I think C# and .Net are objectively better to use than Java or C++. But the tooling and documentation is kind of a mess. Do you build with the "dotnet" command, or the "msbuild" command

Home users are icing on the cake. Suing them for privacy is a bad look (see the RIAA), and using Windows and Office at home reinforces using at work. On the other hand, since they own GitHub they can (in theory) monitor the downloads, chec

It's even worse - project management where you have to micromanage every thing the AI is doing. But yeah, if anybody can do it, the salaries are going to plummet. You don't need a CS degree to tell the AI to try again.
