But aren't you worried you'll lose access to your music? I have to own it! I can't have it at the whim of multiple third parties to take down as they see fit. It's too important.

Why? Isn't the clever bit the JIT, rather than the implementation language?

Great band. I'd urge anyone reading the article to listen to their records, as you don't really get a sense of how they sound from the (really interesting) description of their techniques. It's much less "weird sounding&

Tough it out?? London's a great place to live, especially if you're interested in music, art, theatre, "nightlife" etc. Due to the way the transport networks developed it's also quite easy to get anywhere in England

Until relatively recently, most of the tourist postcards of London you could buy in the tat shops in town had old photos where the buildings were all blackened. I'm not sure when they were cleaned, some time in the late 70s or early 80

Great book shop in the basement of that building (Skoob). Coram's Fields round the corner is brilliant if you have children.

Pelikan Souveran and Diamine inks, highly recommended. I don't write as much as I used to, but it's always a pleasure. I also have a Lamy Safari and a Shaeffer Prelude with some different nib sizes and filled with contrasting inks

You've never found a context in which unique_ptr is useful? I find this surprising. It basically removes a class of memory management bugs with heap allocated objects at a stroke.

For small bands, buying an album on Bandcamp is more lucrative than buying a concert ticket. Gigs sometimes break even but more often lose money at the lower end; venue hire, rehearsal rooms and transport add up and there are usually more p

Interesting this should come up now. I just bought Izotope RX7 which has a built in 'Music Rebalancer' and, according to their PR, this uses machine learning techniques. I've been playing around with it this week in spare ti

Yeah why on earth did they do this? It's such a pain. I can't think of a reason why it would be a good idea, except perhaps "non-programmers don't expect to count from zero" but surely it's easier to overcome t

Yes 'A Time Of Gifts' a remarkable book, not least because as you say it is a snapshot of a world about to be destroyed, and because he is so open about the degree to which it didn't really impinge greatly upon his travels. L

Well, yeah, run-time cost, I meant. Originally this was nil (unless you had a register-specified shift) on the 'classic' 3-stage pipeline in the original ARM (1/2/3/6/7). As the pipeline got deeper this was mor

I always thought this was quite elegant; in the original ARM ISA most ALU operations and register moves (and even some load/store indexing) could pass through the barrel shifter at no extra cost, so a 'ROR' was just a move fr

In the original ARM design the multiple register transfers were much more efficient than the equivalent single register transfers because of the simple architecture which had an inherent load delay (it couldn't fetch an instruction and

The original ARM C compiler ('Norcroft') did this a lot as I recall. Relevant to the original post here of course, as the original spec was a processor that could interpret BBC BASIC as fast as hand optimised 6502 assembler.

Yes, although the new instruction set in ARMv8 removes several of the things that made programming in 'classic' ARM assembly such fun on the Acorn, such as the free barrel shifter on most arithmetic ops, conditional execution on a
