I understood it as: They don't want the low barrier to entry that "one-click let me hack this in the browser" a la Github enables.* E.g. they are not actively seeking to increase the number of contributors. (*) Which is aweso

Nothing prevents you from using a function (`last(myArray)`). In a dynamically typed language what you are proposing makes only very limited sense.

If your friend plays the game - sure. If it's a random person from your friend list who never used the game on the other hand - that's just exploiting social behavior to make money.

Sure, if the game isn't properly up-front about being a limited time demo, it rightfully feels tacky. But if you "bought" it by clicking a "try for a day" button, why would it feel tacky?

I wasn't talking about "making demos". I was talking about native support in the platform to limit usage of an app to a certain time. The developer just clicks a checkbox "make 24 usage hour demo available" and that

There's a difference between short- and long-term interest. People are bad at the latter. Yes, there's demand for a free game - duh, of course people want free games. And when they have to pay a euro to get the game to really prog

I think it's a question of offering some kind of good old demo mode for games. The problem is not that people don't pay for games (they do, see IAP) but that people don't want to pay for things without knowing what they are b

IIRC latin languages offset longer words by speaking generally more syllables per second. The information per time unit is roughly equal across languages. I don't think they actually realize that the word is long/awkward (or at le

Why not? You any install closed-source software on Linux. Firefox will solve this by downloading the binary component for DRM on startup IIRC.

I'm actually surprised (after reading his bio) by this article. Did I completely miss the point of Metal? It sounded like more similar to low-level console platform APIs than to OpenGL or DirectX.

The whole point is to be closer to the "metal". Doing that across GPU vendors would be, well, OpenGL. It's the same as the native interfaces for the PS4 and other consoles - it's supposed to be platform/GPU specif

I think the bigger point is that game studios check in assets. And you don't want the complete history of game assets over 2 years of development and iteration on your machine. And git is generally not optimized for huge binary files.

Let's just say that the lines got a lot blurrier over the last couple of decades. The difference is generally if there's an explicit compilation step that is not hidden from developers. If you "run the source file", then

I rarely need the console tab in the chrome devtools because hitting Esc is normally way faster. Also having the tabs in a defined order allows you to use Cmd+n to switch between them (and the number stays the same).

I don't think the idea in the post was to perform throttling in the client. The idea is to provide a best practice handling of throttling in the client (e.g. what to do when receiving a 429). Since the 429 is mentioned in the article,
