All true, but practically speaking I don't know how complete the spec needs to be. Looking at the HHVM project, they fail a lot of the basic PHP unit tests, yet also have 100% parity with nearly every major CMS/framework there is.

I consider myself a strong software developer, and let me tell you: if someone is acting like a dick now, it won't matter if you're on the same level as them or not. So long as you're treating them with courtesy, respect, and

Laravel/symfony are just one component. It's the approach of organizing your site as packages, and properly namespacing and exposing well-documented class libraries of your own that's becoming the dominant approach even for w

The spaceship <=> is actually a lot cooler than many PHP devs realize. Rails devs find it extremely handy. Now that my PHP apps are moving away from being big apps that render full web-pages, and towards being a thin application layer

D8's a work in progress, and if there's one thing I wouldn't be too critical of a wip for, it's performance. Frankly I don't really see drupal's place in the world anymore. It's so absurdly config-heavy, w

hacker news is predominantly pre-CSS style code, e.g. the only CSS seems to be basic fonts and the upvote arrow, both of which the site would barely be different if run without CSS. Here's their only stylesheet: https://news

I was wgetting all my http requests until about 2 years ago. Curl's undeniable coolness won me over after 15 years. Now I practically live in curl when I'm setting up webservices, and libcurl for PHP does something on nearly every

This proposal is trying to take a common web design pattern, MVC, and make it part of the official spec. HTML is a _markup language_, it's ridiculous to use it as anything but a semantic language. Here's my HTML6 proposal: There’

XSLT is still good to learn -- I think it's conceptually sound, but its implementations are often terrible. I think the big pain points for most people are how finicky XML is in general, but also that any libs you use to generate your

I don't think so. When I go back and watch TV shows or read headlines from around when I was born, they weren't any better back then, I was simply too young to realize how ridiculous they all were. Case in point, the mass hysteria

Finally! I had a lot of concerns about this, but I think they're mostly answered by the discussion. I do like the way union types work (at least nullable types) in Hack, but I think they existing `foo(int $param = null)` approach is fi

If you're looking to find some rude, inappropriately hostile PHP pedants, there are plenty of them on IRC. A language that has so many ways to do one thing attracts a lot of people who believe their way of doing that thing is correct a

You've basically described 99% of the PHP development community there too. When there are so many ways to do something, it fosters the worst kinds of pedants, who don't seem to understand that "using exactly the same syntax&#

Hack's backed by its own open-source community too, and in its own way, is also backed by the PHP community. Laravel, symfony, cakephp, doctrine, etc. are often run on HHVM and support hacklang applications. What makes PHP better makes

I half disagree with the third point - the documentation is certainly lacking (I recently used Redis on an HHVM site, and the adaptor had no documentation that it even existed; just read the source to figure it out), but it's a new-ish
