Nicely done overall. You might want to lock down functions like glob() and readfile() in PHP -- they effectively give the coder read access to your file system.

"It ain't necessarily so" is a common turn of phrase (also a song), which the author was playing off.

Part of McDougall's point in the book is not just that we CAN run long distances but that, over the long term, it's good for us. For most intensive sports, you can only keep up with them for so long before your body starts to wear and tear.

It's also important to make a distinction between "the human body evolved to run long distances" and "the human body is well-suited to running and doing it for long distances is good for you". The latter seems like something we can (and sho

If your exploratory programming involves JavaScript/Ajax, tables can be a pain in the butt to deal with. Semantic HTML makes manipulating the DOM much simpler -- no need to dodge around meaningless markup junk.

25 years is not very long for furniture! I have several pieces in my apartment older than that -- made of real wood, full of character, and which I paid little or nothing for. I've had IKEA stuff but I enjoy having furniture with history so

Nice work! It's great to see a fellow go-playing hacker on HN. I'm the author of EidoGo ( http://eidogo.com/ , http://github.com/jkk/eidogo/tree/master ), which is JavaScript-based, open source, and has features like branching and labels.

If you use a word in a way that most people don't, how can you be surprised when they misunderstand you? I use "straightforward" to describe trivial problems, when I can see the implementation path clearly. "Trivial" implies easy and quick

Krstić's talk on OLPC was what convinced me to donate to the project a couple years ago. His leaving and subsequent writings[1] left me feeling suspicious of OLPC. I'm glad to hear his expertise will be put to good use now and am looking fo

All you really need to get laid is a willingness to eat humble pie while you climb the social learning curve. It's simple: smile, make eye contact, show interest, ask questions. You will probably feel like an idiot. Repeat until confidence

Sometimes I like watching videos precisely because it's slower: the delivery has nuance; I can ruminate a bit; things stick in my memory. A good speaker can really amplify the meaning and memorability of information. Really, it depends on t

It's nice to see a level-headed assessment like this. Too many programmers rely on trends or religious convictions to make decisions. All choices involve trade-offs, so make yourself aware of them!

We're not trying to explain how wheels move in a combustion engine. A functioning brain is not predicated upon qualia, which is why it's so mysterious. (See: zombies.) I think the problem is that qualia don't have any place in existing mode

I would be more inclined to do this if the book is non-technical. When you commit to reading a technical book, you're committing yourself to more than just the time spent reading: you're committing yourself to the time spent applying and fu

Reading the comments, I'm confused by the apparent hate. When I saw the article, I thought, "Hey, isn't this a mostly-solo operation? That's impressive." Am I missing something? Is it just that people think the site is low class?

Nifty idea, but I doubt it will gain traction without some kind of industry-wide standard. Even then, business cards are easy to hand over (no lag) and you can write things on them.
