I love these diagrams. It's nice to see that a large proportion of startups are creating People, they make money by Services, and the tools many people use are Tools. Example answer that ticks the boxes - What are you creating? We're creati

Both flooz and beenz are famous failures which tried to introduce a new global reward scheme. The OP and myself are talking about is a trading market between various existing (and assumedly succesful) point reward systems.

This is really clever. Even if you could get just two large virtual currencies (where points win prizes) and exchange those, it would be beneficial. Perhaps even from the same publisher. You could encourage the companies by offering to take

First time I've seen Gandhi quoted in support of pg. Really good reading summary. August is always a good month for personal productivity, as so many other people are away on their holidays.

This is great so far. It would benefit from phone integration too. I do a lot of selling/appointment booking over the phone and it's a pain to have to manually feed that back in to our CRM. Even better if you went to a meeting, being able t

This is a very good point - acquisitions are a messy business. Can you give us an example - under what circumstances would selling to a private company be a smart move?

I don't understand why expansion equals freedom - can you explain your logic? If they can walk away that easily (i.e. they are replacable), do the founders add value anyway?

I don't think the decision is as simple as "I run it, or I sell out." Private companies hire CEOs fairly often. If you could get a professional manager in to help run your company, you would still have control and could fire/replace him. Ri

This is a great service, although IP autodetect didn't work for me. It wasn't a problem to search for London (it didn't go to Canada, at least!). The map could be sized differently depending on resolution, so you don't have to scroll. The g

In Gates' 1996 'The Road Ahead' he was talking about the convergence of devices to what seemed like a mobile, touch screen web browser (within 5 years, a bit optimistic). He talks about the wallet pc, a sketch of which looks like an iphone

One major problem with East Africa is the lack of a fibre pipe linking it to the rest of the world, although that is due in 2010. It's possible to make a good living offering training services, cybercafes etc - but not call centres or offsh

One idea - get your IT resume together, see if anyone you know from your tech days is hiring, and fire it off. Don't let a lack of college stop you. Another idea - do a bit of networking in the city (meetup.com groups etc) if you want to st

No one mentioned Dilbert's 9-point formula? http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid=%7Bbe5... Won't paste it here, but it's worth a look. The first bit of advice is make a will (yes, even if you aren't married - give it to t

On a 3-month tourist/business visa, it's not a big problem, assuming you have a clean record - just a form, a wait and $131. You should assume that you won't be able to stay in the USA afterwards though.

I started up when I was 18, and ended up going to uni when I was in my mid 20s - "these people are so much younger than me!". It was a mistake (for me) not to go when I was 18. But in your heart you know what it is you want to do. You can a

This may be true. However, I do know some very smart women who have gotten pregnant accidentally. It's claimed (by?) it takes an average of 7 years to exit your startup. That is a large chunk of time for women with a ticking biological cloc

From a Darwinian perspective, you are of course right. I think that potential pregnancy is a factor. The hours traditionally worked by startup founders could be detrimental to health, and the inability to take prolonged breaks from work at

I've seen large companies not do these either. What you've highlighted are great ideas, and I'm not sure they've been widely implemented (other than as bespoke services). Traditional rankings of salespeople by turnover could be subject to s

I am glad to see that Vodafone, a public company with a market cap of around $1,500,000,000,000, are considered a startup (data courtesy of CrunchNotes). Is the site very slow for other people? (I suspect this is the google maps element).

"I'll do 160 mph at 32 mpg at 9500'or 10,500'... so clearly flying is cheaper than driving, and I don't have to stop and buy lunch!" Brilliant. Why don't more people do this? (Aside from landing fees and weather etc, still very cool).

Surely it would reduce the number of comments as it still loses some. As the author says - a CAPTCHA solution reduces comments significantly, lets say by 50%. So if Mollom marks 10% as spam, and half of those are actually legit, 2.5% of com
