Yum typically upgrades packages through very minor version changes. Like a.b.c to a.b.c+1. Rolling back is not nearly dangerous as you are implying in a curated distribution.

While not identical to Guix or Nix, it certainly is analogous to rolling things back. If I upgrade a package from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 and it breaks, I can pin it to 1.0.1 and continue on my merry way.

"Programming Clojure" is on the list. Is this because a version of the book influenced a later version of the language?

I pin older versions of packages all the time via yum.

Are the two really the same though? I mean an application that breaks sucks, and you might have to roll back an update or wait for a patch. It is annoying and you may lose some time. A security breach may be more rare, but it also might be

KeePass should let users configure a pattern for passwords, like "8-25 letters or numbers or these symbols, must have 1 uppercase letter", and just replicate that socially (the pair of web site and pattern) across all KeePass user

What? If my library requires X version 1.2 or higher, how is it a breaking change if I don't work with version 2.0 or 1.0 or anything except 1.2 through 1.99999? That's the whole point of software versioning, no matter what you ca

Consumers may want to use a different version. Perhaps they want a newer one (bug fix, security fix). Perhaps they want an older one (since another dependency was tested against an older version of the dep in question). Semver gives you a w

Because if you start relying on something new or fixed in x.2.z of your dependency you want to make sure anyone using your code isn't using x.1.y.

Still don't see the big problem. If the major version is updated and it doesn't affect you, you have a 10 second job to do. If it does, you have a bigger job to do (or don't update). What's the big deal?

Perhaps, but he repeatedly claimed that the minor and patch numbers conveyed no meaning, while dismissing the semver spec as a manifesto. But if he read and understood it, he'd know those were important numbers. Maybe moreso than the m

My close friend tried Zenni. They sent her glasses which gave her fishbowl vision every time she rotated her head (edges warped quickly as the head turned). She contacted Zenni support and was told "We found a defect in your lenses and

I see. I kind of wish there was one topic about the conference that had comments about the services; seeing so many individual upvoted posts about each service is a little much for my taste. But that's just my opinion.

Can you post your code, compiler, and the disassembly from main()? The only way I believe these numbers is if your compiler optimized the loop away to a constant.

Being too clever or too terse is possible in any language though. It is an education and experience problem, not a language problem. Some languages may be slightly worse than others, but the root cause (and solution) is the same across the

How is that different from using a C function called add_two_ints which deletes the root file system and returns 42? I don't think it is possible to create a language that can prevent dumb code from being written.
