typically the original investors get their cash back (no more, no less). there's no reason an acquiring company would want their stock in the hands of random investors they have no prior relationship with.

This is pointless and misleading. For example: #3 on the "top" list is Danger. According to crunchbase (where this site gets its data from) it was acquired for $500MM. And the founder went on to start Android. Why does it matter that danger

yup. i made an iphone app named WhosAround a few years ago and got sued by the WhosHere guys. Just Google "myRete lawsuit" (myRete is their corporate name)
