This is going to come off as abrasive (out of context it sounds pretty bad), but: I've never understood why progress should be sacrificed because 'someone loses a job.' Idealistically, this indicates a problem with society -

I'm not sure what you mean by word, but + vs. add() definitely have different levels of cognitive burden: Compare: (a + (b + c)) + d vs. add(add(a, add(b, c)), d) One is arithmetic, the other is polish notation.

A few years ago, this was very much true. The Dispatch lib for doing HTTP requests was particularly guilty of this - you had to learn a whole new mapping of symbols to methods! I feel Scala is beginning to stabilize now. The recent releas

Yes, you're always paying the character: each character increases mental load on the developer - either through code complexity ( https://github.com/scalaz/scalaz ) or just the sheer amount of code (would you want t

I disagree - there's an entire class of problems in C that stem from something that isn't in the languages you mentioned: manual memory management.

Despite this poster's argumentative tone, they speak the truth. The tech scene in China is pretty limited due to tremendous government influence / interference. Heck, step 1 of setting up a foreign company in China is to bribe l

In the case of the second student, I feel there's some missing context there. My guess is it was an alumni recommendation, which would explain the circumstances. For student #3 - I'm unaware of how popular the practice of having

Yes, I understand the concept that you quoted. Theoretically, it's more sound. However, I want to point out that the purpose of the 'magic mirror' method is to ease mental math. It frees your brain from having to spend time

Ha, this problem is nowhere near as bad as it is in China, where your admissions are nearly (outside of connections) solely based on your college admission test results. At least in the US, the most selective universities look at other aspe

I agree with you here, but I meant more from a process rather than application perspective. By analogy, it's like choosing to use options / maybe monad instead of null in a service that takes input. The end service's functio

This is how I learned it - in hindsight, I feel this is easier to reason about, as it forces you to apply operations synchronously. (As opposed to, say, subtract 5 from both sides, then add 8 => which we can reduce to add 3. But this r

I was decent at math pre-college - placed in top 5 in several state-level competitions, and enjoyed my fair share of more obscure branches that weren't traditionally taught in school (number theory, combinatorics). I agree with the maj

Given that 'You are forgotten.' takes a long time to 'solve,' it could be a reflection that even the greatest will eventually be forgotten. (Say, if the human race manages to survive millions of years, and colonizes dif

That one is somewhat reasonable (and relatively obscure code you'd probably never write). A more realistic example: inner classes can't see class variables from their enclosing classes. (Why enclose classes? - builder pattern)
