At Discord we've actually spent a bit of time optimizing around frequently updating tables of data. On the extreme end of things, we have lists that contain several thousand items that update a few elements that are potentially updatin

Aye! Well aware. I actually think you added that for us specifically! Anyways, it's worth noting for anyone interested that they'll need to be able to handle spikey reconnects. In our case, we keep a buffer of the last N websocket

Neat. We've been using CF websockets for some time now on the Enterprise plan. If you're intending to use CF websockets, be prepared for random (and potentially massive) connection drops, and be sure you're architected to han

We use Elixir/Erlang at scale at Discord. For building distributed, massively scalable soft-realtime systems, it's been amazing.

Interestingly enough, when refreshing the count of closed varies wildly, and when looking at closed issues, the count of open varies wildly +/- a few million. I wonder what causes that.

I work at discord. The app is still react native. We use component kit for chat messages view though. But this was because early react native when we built it couldn't do what we wanted to. May switch to full RN soon.

This is awesome! At work, we're a heavy user of google's network load balancer to route persistent TCP websocket connections to our haproxy cluster. It's worked flawlessly. Glad to see the design behind this released!

We've got our entire marketing site statically rendered. Looking forward to react 15, should get rid of lots of "data-reactid"s which should shave a bit off of the size of the rendered html.

I feel like this is a bit silly. Feel like one could just speak HTTP or Thrift, and use etcd or zookeeper for discovery. RabbitMQ just complicates the stack. Also, it's HA options are generally... disappointing.

This is false. Nginx will spawn new workers with the changed config and gracefully shutdown the old ones once the new ones are online. There should be no drop in traffic or dropped requests while this happens.

Chat history search is something that's coming soon. Although the permission system may be something that's complicated, it fits the gamer clan niche well. A lot of people actually have been requesting that we add more complex per

We do not have any retention policy settings right now. Messages are kept until you delete the channel they're in. Our product focus is on making VOIP the best it can for gamers/gaming communities. Definitely not huge enterprises!

Oddly enough, Discord started out as a chat/voip tool for smaller gaming groups too, but as a side-effect of awesome engineering we've been able to handle large communities really well. Over the winter break, one community sprung

That's a bit silly. We've got a lot of people who use Discord for non-gaming stuff. I wonder what specifically about "for gamers" turns them off.

It's a shortcoming in the GCE salt-cloud driver not being able to specify those in a deployment configuration. Sorry if this was unclear!
