We are experimenting with webworkers to power a very complicated autocomplete and scoring system in our client. So far so good. We're able to keep the UI running at 60fps while we match, score and sort results in a web-worker.

There's a node module, but this is a quick hack to do it. Relatively low cost if this function isn't getting called too much. Combining this + some basic memoization would probably be the easiest and most performant solution. I im

I wonder if Skylake would offer a material improvement for our workload. We don't necessarily use AVX-512, but we do use a heck of a lot of CPU resources on the current architecture. We are a python/elixir shop. Great job GCP team

At work, we dispatch messages to clients using websockets (on a pretty massive scale). >How do you deal with the potential that a browser goes offline and misses messages? It depends on how long the browser goes offline for is it a trans

We have a real time distribution system written in Erlang/Elixir that keeps the clients in sync. We do not poll for messages. That wouldn't work at our scale :)

My post above describes the main reason for moving from redis - the fact that data for inactive users doesn't need to be memory perpetually. :P

Memory & CPU. We knew we'd be running into both eventually - without adding additional redis instances (memory growing way faster than CPU usage in this specific scenario). When it was initially built, it was basically a bunch of r

We've recently had to move away from redis for persistent data storage at work too - opting instead to write a service layer ontop of cassandra for storing data. Redis was tremendous in our journey up there - but one of the shortcoming

Games are the target niche - but really - anyone can use it. At the end of the day - it's just a chat product - that has some gamer centric features.

This is indeed the case. Our real time system is outside of firebase and APNS and it handles the actual real time updates of chat state once the app is launched. We also have a delivery system that accounts for network cuts/switches an

It is constant - but iirc, it'd be trivial to make a dynamically scaling pool. At the end of the day, a pusher is just a TCP connection. Keeping a pool of fixed size and planning capacity around scaling horizontally is a perfectly acce

At some point, when a system has entered a failure mode for a while, it makes sense to start shedding load, rather than attempting to deliver every single push notification. Also worth mentioning, a minute of downtime is already a million b

It depends on if you're CPU bound or IO bound. If you're CPU bound - switching to an async based web framework may not help that much. If you're IO bound, and you're using synchronous web workers that are sitting idle wa

We use React Router on our project. Looks like 4.0 does break pretty much everything. My thoughts on the upgrade are pretty much: - Do we actually need to upgrade? Old react router works fine. - If we do need to upgrade - how long will it t

Lots of poorly written webapps give Electron a bad name. Slack, unfortunately does have it's performance issues, but there are other popular chat apps written in Electron that are very performant, even on large teams.

Does the SSD iops increase happen automatically? Or do we have to turn it on somewhere or recreate the disk? Also any plan to allow objects in GCS bucket to automatically move to nearline after a specified time, like s3 to glacier?
