It's worth noting that the instance migration basically null-routed the redis VM for a good 30 minutes, until we manually intervened and restarted it. The instance was completely disconnected from the internal network immediately follo

If I had to speculate, I'd suspect that even though they reaffirmed the BSD+Patent license publicly, FB probably started exploring the possibility of relicensing the projects shortly after that. Not to say WP saying they wont use react

I doubt it was related. The wheels to get this in motion must have started months in advanced, probably around the time ASF started advising against this license (labeling at as Category-X [1]) [1] https://www.apache.org/leg

Gif resizing is pretty hard. We've spent some pretty substantial effort in doing gif resizes for our infra. Out of curiosity, what library is your saas backed by?

Elixir/Erlang is great, but in addition to knowing the language, there is a huge library of tools within OTP/ERTS that you need to understand to effectively use it and skills learned from other languages don't map too well to

It is kinda a 20 minute job. On production, where I work, we just bake the maxmind DB into our app server images (it updates when we redeploy - which is a couple times a week) and use the maxmind client to read from that DB file. Was just a

What's the benefit here instead of using the tcp load balancer? I'm guessing it's primarily URL mapping. Does it support websocket compression (meaning the load balanced servers don't need to do compression - as it'

The point is that you only send the hash to the database to connect. If you steal the hash, you can connect to the database using said hash, not needing the plaintext. The password might as well be the hash in this case. Hence the equivalen

Pretty interesting - but doing some number crunching, Fly looks to be two orders of magnitude more expensive than enterprise cloudflare. Which does offer smart routing, load balancing and what not.

Yo! We actually do support Volume + Pan in the Discord RPC - which will let developers implement positional audio. But this means that it'll have to be something that's implemented by game developers rather than how mumble does it

Yeah - there are more plans to handle more robust message retry logic. But it's a pretty hard problem to handle. Duplicate message delivery has been fixed for a while though - although there are some rare cases where it can still happe

This was a long time ago - back in alpha stages of the product. We've since made some pretty big strides to being resilient to network drops, packet loss, network roaming, etc... I was actually one of the engineers who worked on these.

Maybe one day. It'd be trivial to add per-locale templates. The hard part really is exposing that in our new guild flow (hey - what language is this server gonna be in) - and also handling if someone chooses to change their server lang

Yup. We're thinking about that too. We've been monitoring node performance closely to see when we'll need to shift the topology around a bit. I'd want to keep our clusters small and the topology uniform before I investig

The historical index workers index the history of the server, whereas we have a real-time index worker that is consuming and bulk inserting messages in real time. Searching for the first time in a server turns on real-time indexing and trig

Good question. So far we've noticed the refresh time to be negligible (worst case in the tens of milliseconds). It's worth noting that most of the cost of doing a search on Discord is in pulling the message context from Cassandra

Can you explain how Discord makes privacy hard to set up? Servers by default are private (No one can join or even see the server unless they are invited to it). You can disable people's ability to create invites with a 3 clicks. (discl

Patches could be assets - updated map data - updated textures - updated AI scripts? I don't think these need a full app store update as it's not changing the game from a game to a dating app (for example).
