Perhaps I’m a bit simpleminded here, but the answer to me seems pretty obvious. A lot of people spend a lot of time driving places. You can’t use your iDevice while driving. But you could if you had a self driving car. Owning an autonomous

BEAM's default allocator settings will allocate often. It's just how the VM works. The erlang allocation framework: http://erlang.org/doc/man/erts_alloc.html is a complicated beast. We were able to simul

We've experienced a plethora of platform issues that were exacerbated by how BEAM consumes resources on the system. Here's a few that come to mind: - CPU utilization can differ wildly on Haswell & Skylake. On Skylake processor

At Discord, we use distillery to package, and salt to configure our Elixir machines. We also bake golden images using basically the same thing. Our CI builds our elixir artifacts, updates them to GCS, then our minions pull the artifacts, un

Thanks! And thanks for building Cloudflare workers. You have no idea how much nicer it is to write and express a lot of this logic in modern javascript, rather than nginx configs and VCLs.

For what it's worth at work (Discord) we serve our marketing page/app/etc... entirely from the edge using Cloudflare workers. We also have a non-trivial amount of logic that runs on the edge, such as locale detection to serve

I highly doubt it. The new feature they were testing was probably rolled out to a % of their user-base (as any sane company rolling out new features does.) Facebook has tools that lets them target experiments to specific subsets of their us

This is super awesome! Cheers from the Discord team here! :) EDIT: One bug, it lets you try to DM invites to other bots on the server. We don't let bots DM bots on an API level :O

Doesn't feel like it's needed. "getStateFromProps" would have been fine. I think any state "derivation" from props is implied.

Discord uses a freemium model. We have a subscription service called Nitro[0] which adds some cool non-essential perks that is very popular with our user-base. Additionally, we run a very slim and optimized infrastructure relative to other

Storage is actually really cheap for this, we don't store the message data in ES, it just builds the inverted indices. I explain this more in-depth on the blog post. On GCP, 50TB of Persistent SSD is roughly $9000/month before any

We've actually had plans for an open source page and showcasing open source communities that use Discord for the better part of a year. We finally got around to doing it though - completely unrelated to Slack's recent announcement

Yes we do! We’ve been able to shake out a fair amount of platform bugs that the Beam VM had on GCP too! Thanks to the google team for taking them all seriously and fixing them. Some were particularly nasty :)

At 150m images per day, not counting bandwidth, imgix would cost ~135k/month. Running 12 n1-standard-16 instances (peak load according to the article) is ~$5k/month. It's not hard to see why we wrote it in house when you cons
