Can you provide some specifics? You say you observe this trend in YC startups? Is it because people are applying as they finish school and need a different visa to stay and participate in YC? Is it because you get lots of applicants from

This is a highly uneven article. "It’s happening: Lou Dobbs’ dream come true and Silicon Valley’s worst nightmare." ok, lets start the article by sprinkling some politics on it. "We’re already seeing the reverse brain drain as smart immigra

I doubt that getting a one year jump on work will be more valuable than spending the year and doing the masters. Look at it this way: What are the odds of your first startup being a big hit? If you think its incredibly high, then I'd say

I mostly agree. There are a few corner cases where this does not apply. I'm working on a new app right now which I feel there is no value in openly exposing it prior to launch. Even after launch, I'm only going to market directly to my e

yep, a key reason I avoid BigCorp as well. But your comparison may be off: I have read recently (I think from HN) that forcing doctors and nurses to scrub before surgery reduces disease. I know, we all like to think the docs will do this

Your response is well said. I didn't add specific examples as to not put too much politics into the discussion. I think if you look over the last decade or two of the FCC board, you will find people were chosen for their political connecti

Perhaps they are, perhaps its closer to what they claim. Hard to say. But that part should not matter much. I expect the FCC to protect the consumer in this case. I expect limits on the stranglehold a company (Apple or ATT) can have on

yep, thanks. And when I refereed to ambiguity, I was being very kind to the laws and industry that support these aspects of the DMCA. I think if our courts upheld the DMCA to throw a person in jail for hacking their own iPhone to get arou

If Apple locked down desktop OS X in the same way it has locked down the iPhone, I would switch to desktop linux in a heartbeat. I did not say Apple should distribute 3rd party software. I said they were restricting downloads. They have b

They wouldn't have to train so many if they easily allowed 3rd party app stores. If you don't like the wait in Apple's official store, go to the alternative. As long as they insist on being the bottleneck, this will be a problem.

The questions are good. The answers may be honest or not. Hard to say. It wasn't too long ago that Apple tried to cover up their problems with backdated stock options.

The FCC certainly used to be staffed by morons. At least tech morons (the board, I don't know about the employees). We at least have a solid chairman now, lets hope its a sign of the times.

There is outstanding ambiguity in DMCA and related laws which are used to great effect by companies like Apple. Is it illegal to hack your iPhone? I think not, but one reason I believe Apple has not sued over this yet is they get benefit

uh no, I did not say anything of the sort. Go read any software license over the last 30 years. Almost all say they offer no warranty. If Apple has a bug in their core software, are they liable for support or loss of data? I'm sure they

good overview. Hopefully, the FCC will decide that the iPhone belongs to the user once its purchased and not Apple. If the user decides to change the user experience or even brick their device, that's their choice.
