I bought the hard copy on amazon a few weeks ago. Best ruby books I've seen. It ranks high compared to 'best of' books for other langs as well.

Screen is a good tool and does have a collaborative feature. But it requires the following: 1 - install screen and configure the collaboration on your server 2 - create a user on your server for the other person to login 3 - the other pers

There are other ways to look at this. The iPhone launched in Japan and is considered a success form numbers I've seen. As for China, you do not need to penetrate the entire market to be successful. Mercedes is expensive in China. Most c

I didn't do the survey. If I had, I would have said I was "employed" as I'm working on two startups. But have income of zero.

most likely this is posturing, at least in part. One key difference between Chinese and Western culture is the degree to which "a deal can be renegotiated". The Chinese tend more towards "a deal is always open to renegotiation". Western

The laws I'm talking about don't go into effect until 10-15 years from now. And they've been watered down. And I expect they will be watered down more by the time the due dates arrive. But the original purpose was to force better fuel ef

I agree with this response. But your prior idea of an energy tax, I disagree. Instead of a tax, you could simply make it illegal to sell vehicles under a certain efficiency rating. Congress has taken this approach, sort of. The only thi

I was just thinking of those events this past week as I see how the media is assisting corporate/industry status quo to fight health care reform. Regardless of what you think of the details of this current legislation (I'm not a fan of som

When I first went to the IKEA Shanghai a few years ago, I was frustrated at how difficult it was to shop there. IKEA is setup to make you walk through the entire store. There is not shortcut to get to the checkout. This problem becomes en

cool, I hope to be there. I think its amusing the tag-line is: "select fun, profit from real_world where relational=false ;" This is SQL structure. A problem with NoSQL is we need to communicate queries in a language we all know. Even if

This is a drawback to putting everything in the cloud: features will be weighed by the CPU cycles and storage required by the providers. Can't wait til we come full circle and get back to client/server computing ;). I'm only half joking.

You can't really have a race to the top. That type of competition "narrows" the top. The race becomes an illusion.

yes, an ORM will do all that and then some. Sometimes you don't want the extra stuff. I'm not knocking ORMs. They serve their purpose. Sometimes all I need though is a simple lower level driver.

Thats a pretty decent definition. I think their phrase "incompatible type systems" is meant for you to stress the word systems. The word type is not needed. Not to be confused with "type of an object, i.e. its class". If you really want

Most all low level rdb libs provide basic type conversion from allowed types in the db to type fitting the language you are using. From these libs you send SQL (any SQL you care to send) and you get returns of a "row" or a cursor usually.

Yes, dict is a hash map. A python dict is not "typeless", it contains whatever python objects you put in it. Most client drivers/libs for RDBs have basic type conversions for each language. You don't always need an ORM for this. If you h

There are lots of ways to do this. A most common approach is to have each of those dicts be a first class object in python/blub, and therefore you know the class of the object. Customer.find() returns a customer which contains your dict.

I agree with Atwood's conclusion here. If you must use both an OO second tier and a RDB 3rd tier, concessions must be made. You can get around most concessions with more code at the hard parts, but sometimes its just not worth the effort.

Should the "are you a permanent resident" question continue to be a roadblock? Its my understanding the visa programs are meant to help out the U.S. long term by bringing in immigrants that makes the U.S. their home (my favorite reason) an
