I'm guessing AT&T's loss would be in allowing a toehold on number portability. Your current choice is: work hard to get sucky_cell_provider_X move your number to sucky_cell_provider_Y. The process isn't transparent to most consumers.

You don't need evidence of a cartel, monopoly, or cheating to decide that society/economy may be better off if the rules were changed. I have no evidence that things would be better if the rules were changed but some people that know bette

wow!! what a story. I can see why it got flagged for not being tech startup oriented, whatever. But wow, I would have upvoted it anyway.

If your in any city in US/Canada that has even a small startup culture, go to their meetups. I can think of 20 U.S. cities that would be easy to hook into the local IT scene. Tell us where you are and maybe someone can plug you in. Also,

Hi Sam!! Hope you didn't find my post critical of you. It wasn't my intent. I'm very grateful for the high quality work that is/was datamapper and for your support while I was learning it. All good programmers boast about a thing or two

I understand. There are plenty of public companies that are not well known outside their niche. This is the part that is motivating: a big company can be successful and relatively unknown. To compare and scale down my feelings on this to

Interesting take on why Canadian banks are doing well. I had heard a different take earlier this year. I read they were doing well because the Canadian gov did not deregulate to allow them to take the types of risks that banks, investment

What is your opinion on Sinatra's support community? I keep peeking at Sinatra for my new app. I have a Merb app in production and working on a new one. My new app has characteristics quite different than my old one but I still get to bo

wow, that's a tough quote from Smoot. I use datamapper for an app in production and have no problems, but to be fair, my RDB access is very straightforward and I don't use any of the relations DSL stuff. Although I think a lot of Sam's wo

I'll add two more data points to 6% being a reasonably small amount. 1 - I had a great mentor years ago. His software company, which is still running strong for 20 years, gave 5% to each of several key employees (they had good salaries as

"You could say that giving up 6% for $25k is a bad deal, that it values the business at less than $500k" I'll take it further. This is a good deal without the mentoring, although I can't imagine anyone finding your startup valuable without

I assume your funding has already set the params of what you can offer, so what is the value of hiding any of it? Standard attitude toward stock options is that you'll get screwed. So why even bother to provide them if employees don't valu

I see what your getting at. But this whole example is a setup. Let me go through some of your arguments to show just how easily they can be turned. 1 - "you would not expect that two out of nine of your collection also changed its height.

I've seen this technique applied recently. The founders had plenty of people interested in the angel round. Yet, they refused to put a price on the investment, deferring it to a future funding event. Even many savvy investors that unders

I hope they do manage to pull something out of this. At $31M invested, a $170M sale could end up getting sopped up by investors. Anyway, congrats to them and I hope it works out.

Good call. There is plenty of blame to go around. The models the quants used served their purpose of recording "profits" "right now". I think being short sighted was intentional or at least "unconsciously intentional".

This is the home buyer's own little perk of "mark to market" behavior. "Your making $X today? OK, we can safely assume that will be the same tomorrow.". Sometime bad accounting practices work in your favor. Congrats on getting in while
