Thanks for the answers. For all the flak US education receives, the option of taking AP classes sounds good (and it gives college credits, which is even better!). This is utterly derailing the main topic of conversation, but... I know tha

Ah, I've been reading up on this, and indeed they've redacted some information. According to Assange, this is to prevent anyone operating in the region from being attacked by insurgents. I'm guessing that it would be bad for Wikileak's publ

They never edit anything out. If they release a summarized or abridged version of something with a political spin to it, you can always find the full, unaltered sources if you bother to look on wikileaks.org.

That thread is incredibly scary. I get tired of this "for the children" mantra that's used to justify every last pissy tirade of every self-righteous parent on the face of the Earth. If the mother actually cared, she'd have not turned her k

It's not compiled languages, it's languages that are too verbose and too complex that are the problem. If you want to use a compiled language that doesn't suck, try Common Lisp or Haskell. I don't understand how he made the jump from "Rob P

Hmm... I just ordered a Happy Hacking Lite 2 keyboard, which uses a membrane switch. The HH Professional uses a mechanical switch, but the ~$250 price scared me away. I also looked at the Das Keyboard and the Unicomp Customizer, which are b

Bach is almost exclusively my favorite classical composer. If you want some of his music, check out classiccat.net. It makes great programming music, but some of it is worth listening to when you're not distracted. (-: I also enjoy Aphex Tw

I'm not the most cultured coffee drinker, but it's amazing to me what passes as "good" in the US. All the self-proclaimed coffee addicts I know drink either McDonald's or Starbuck's, which taste like lukewarm piss water and burnt coffee bea

Self-analysis - is there any rationale behind your thoughts? If you can pull yourself out of the bowels of misery long enough to think (it's hard, trust me), why do you feel the way you feel? There's always a good chance that there's a more

that makes me wonder whether your comment is made to look you smarter or dumber than you are The Dunning-Kruger effect specifically talks about honest self-assessment, not artificial posturing to skew other's views of your intelligence.

Assange explains his reasoning behind the "spin" they put on material here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBENlJfZ-f8 I'm not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand, I happen to think what Wikileaks is doing is important, and calling

It could be that as one learns more about a topic, one learns more about what one doesn't know about a topic. For example, if you know while, for, if/then and case statements you could think that's all you need to know about programming. B

My favorite part of the Dunning-Kruger effect are the people who used to talk about how smart they are, but upon learning of the study run around saying they're dumb because they think that puts them on par with the intelligent.
