I'm not sure this has as much to do with her age as her gender (although I'm sure the former does play some kind of a role). My sister uses snapchat, instagram, and facetime all the time in the same ways as you described your sister does,

Great post, but this part scares me a bit... I think a lot of services (even banks!) have serious security problems and seem to be able to weather a small PR storm. So figure it out if it really is important to you (are you worth hacking?

In the group context, I think this makes a lot of sense. It is similar to Path (which is basically a "group" limited to my closest friend). For every post I make, it shows me which of my friends saw it, and that is convenient and cool. I
