I'd guess that people wouldn't mind the "consolation message", but are objecting to the blatant self-promotion that accompanies it. We don't read HN comments because we want yet more ads; the internet has more than

Interestingly, I just noticed a Zip Pay option here on a UK retailer's site, and in this case there doesn't appear to be any flat fee involved; the 4 payments add up to exactly the standard retail price of the product. I guess thi

Have you personally tried moving from a stable, developed country to somewhere with much lower cost of living? I lived for some years in a "good" suburb of a pretty well-known third-world city. Everyone had security bars on the wi

pdfTeX was an extension to TeX (as was XeTeX), for a long time maintained as a collection of change-files applied to the canonical TeX source, although nowadays they're managed as separate WEB files. LuaTeX was in turn an extension of

Actually, the Web2C build process normally used these days (e.g. in TeX Live) does first run tangle, to convert the WEB source to Pascal. Then the web2c tool (along with a few helpers) translates that Pascal to C.

Quite a few TeX-oriented editors support something like this; a couple that I've used personally are TeXShop (macOS only), TeXworks (cross-platform). Searching for "SyncTeX" suggests that others such as TeXnicCenter and TeXSt
