I mean, it was bullshit from jump street, but if Wisconsin had poured (more) money into Foxconn's pockets, I'm sure they'd have been happy to put something up.

I mean, Elastic was successful because of license arbitrage; to complain about said arbitrage when Amazon does it is ... well, it's hard to feel a lot of sympathy.

They could maybe find someone who is conversant with the world of computing we find ourselves in, more recently than 1988?

I think it's more complex than one equals the other; the two phenomena are inexplicably interconnected. The duality is a very non-helpful frame to use to analyze, well, basically anything.

Do you, though? Like, if he were of pristine character and not repulsive to a significant subset of the people involved, it would still be a useful conversation to have -- given how controversial he is, why fight the fight?

Isn't the real problem that the FSF has completely failed at its stated goal of expanding software freedom for the entirely of Stallman's tenure? I get that to many people he is an objectionable creep, but from a purely results

No -- I want a phone that is not subject to Google's data vampirism that competes with Apple for the dollars of the actual humans who use them. If that phone runs Linux and is free, great! If not, less good, but still acceptable. I wis

The real tragedy is the USB HID spec, which is weirdly extravagant (including dedicated space for golf simulators ) while also being totally parsimonious with the modifier keys.

We used a lot of PyObjC BITD at Apple to explore frameworks that we couldn't get documentation for. That was simultaneously awesome and so so so broken, from an organizational perspective.

Saying that something is obsolete isn't a value judgement -- it's an observation of the differences between the state of the world when it was necessary and now. This describes autotools to a 't'. It's not that ther

I loved the idea that the OOP world and the C worlds were syntactically different. It made the language significantly more elegant than C++, which doesn't even take into account the beauty of its Smalltalk message passing semantics.

Part of it was licensing. Probably more of it was the personalities involved at e.g. Microsoft or SGI.

Apple also varies, culturally, pretty widely between departments. It's not always the case that abusive behaviour under one VP -- or good treatment under a different one! -- is extrapolate-able to other organizations.

I mean, I don't think (2) is controversial -- the issue is that there are many dimensions you can measure to determine "best". There's not a settled single definition.

I have always wanted this "privacy box", but in a portable form -- a brick that your phone/laptop/TV/&c. uses persistent storage. No more cloud.

I badly miss my old PowerMac 8600 -- I filled that sucker with RAM and had a big, persistent RAM disk to boot from, and it ran MachTen (for Emacs) and everything else I needed for work (CodeWarrior) and of course, it was the best Myth II

The market for Mac OS specific services would be vanishingly small; everybody else can just use Linux. Apple's not going to make a play for a commodity market.

This is stupefying to me. Like, when Anand did the A12 or A11 reviews, I wrote: "The craziest thing is how close [to 1/56th of a Xeon 8176] they get at 3W. That's the part that's staggering. What could Apple do with, s
