What if you don't want the same applications with the same interface modalities on different devices? Shouldn't we be much more concerned about data portability than application portability?

As a user, I happily browse in Safari. I use Chrome for interacting with Google, but nothing else. I haven't noticed anything that I want to do that is prevented by my use of Safari. As a developer, I never touch the web, so. It comes

I loved this, but I was a bigger fan of Starflight , which I would love to see a slightly updated version of -- not a full reboot but just ... more visual detail on the planets, maybe some 3D effects.

Could it be that people aren't really interested in undoing the mistakes of Web2, but rather just kicking off a new round of consolidation, where they could be the gatekeepers/platform owners?

Yes. It is a Java application that originally was written to facilitate the upload of large intermediate video files from post houses to the iTunes Store ingest systems. I know because I was there.

Darwin is much further from BSD than Android is from mainline Linux, and the Android/Linux distinction is entirely sufficient to call them different operating systems. I think you can accurately say that there are either two or five di

One of the best things about OS X (as it used to be called) is that the runtime was accessible not just from Objective-C, but also from ruby or python or JavaScript. It was very cool to be able to fire up a repl and go exploring in the inna

Really? Whinging about syntax? You don't understand how cleanly dividing the C bits and bobs from the Smalltalk-derived object system by using distinct syntax could be considered a more elegant solution to the problem than C++'s i

I have a deep fondness for Objective-C, which always struck me as a much more elegant way to bridge the C/OOP divide than C++.

All art works better when it's pushing against constraints. But I would take the film of the '70s, as flabby and weird and bloated as it ended up, over any other decade.

Fair enough, and I'm not saying that BBEdit is wrong , per se, but it is close enough to useable for me (as a very long time Emacs user) that when there's something off, it strikes me as really off.

I have never once — in a career as a professional programmer that is coming up on 30 years — needed to insert a literal tab character in a document I’m writing. Not once. I’ll check out the bindings control panel, but in the past (as of m

I really wish it supported keyboard rebinding. I really wish this. I would happily pay for it, over and over again, but the tab key behaviour when editing structured text is just ... wrong.

Kavanaugh's concurrence is 100% an invitation for a broader restraint-of-trade suit, and honestly, it is long overdue. The NCAA is dead, they've got to settle, but there isn't going to be any real interest in half measures.

The amount of money that Apple would save to put a bunch of 2U ARM servers into racks is dwarfed by the costs of building such systems. Seriously, nobody (to the first approximation) is going to buy a macOS server, and so there's no re

What's in it for Apple? I'm not trying to be glib, here, but unless there were some Mac only server functionality, nobody would buy an Apple ARM powered datacentre machine.
