You strongly disagree that photon137 sounds more reasoned and compelling to me? You're welcome to disagree, but I'll be happy to tell you flat out you're wrong. My point was about the impact of their respective statements, not the content.

As a neutral third party who has no strong opinion about this issue and limited background, photon137 is making the much stronger (and informative) case. Not sure if your goal is to have an impact on people like me WRT this issue, but if so

The "official" way to do this is through what's called a 409A Valuation, a process designed to assess the fair market value of your common stock (and other classes, eventually). You can do one yourself (note: talk to your CFO first -- you h

When Groupon was growing early on, it was an example of a successful startup founded without the usual Silicon Valley trappings, in Chicago. When Groupon flames out, it's an example of Silicon Valley's excess. Can't win, it seems. ;)

This is one of the fundamental things 37signals doesn't seem to understand. In a winner-take-all market, which includes any market with strong network effects, you want to get as big as you can as fast as you can. Charging for the product

If you're telling a story, don't digress. In particular, don't have a six-paragraph section entitled "Digression." A challenge for the author: summarize the article in a single sentence that any Ruby developer would understand.

I co-founded Everlane ( http://www.everlane.com ). I'd agree with these three priorities, although I wouldn't use those words. A customer who comes back to your site, does N things, but doesn't purchase is telling you something -- you jus

I invite anyone who is skeptical and in the SF Bay Area to reach out to us and say "hi." I'm jesse@devbootcamp.com. You can read my HN profile -- hopefully it's credible enough that you don't think I'm in the business of blowing smoke.

I'm telling a story; am I supposed to leave out the ending? Michael, my eventual co-founder, was peripherally involved in this whole episode. And trust me, neither HomeRun nor Everlane need the pitiful traffic my blog post will send them ;

Exec is definitely positioning itself as the "more exclusive" TaskRabbit, or at least the "more professional" TaskRabbit. At Everlane we used TaskRabbit all the time for random, around-the-city tasks, including fetching things from IKEA (th

The way I think about it is this: comprehensibility is a feature. You have to weigh it against accuracy, effectiveness, etc., but it should be taken into account.

Patents don't exist to protect people's work, per se, they exist to "to promote the progress of science and useful arts." Protecting people's work is a means to that end. In this case it seems obvious, to me, that this is not promoting inn
