American culture seems to have become deeply intolerant of differences of opinion. Everything is now a scorched-earth, winner takes all battle, with no attempt at compromise or de-escalation. Everyone is a combatant, every word and action i

Looks like it’s heading in the direction of verified identities being linked to social media accounts. That’s about the only action that would reduce the amount of transgressive actions performed on FB et al.

If it happens I’ll come back and edit the comment, until then it’s just another publicity grab. I’ll have to put it on my 2023 todo list!

Because you stand over the mods shoulders watching them? How do you claim to know this and that it wasn’t flagged?

There’s a certain level of Musk fatigue. An increasing number of people seem to be tired of his antics.

An algorithms question proves today what it proved 15 years ago: that the candidate learned the algorithm. It does not and never did prove that the candidate spontaneously generated the solution in the interview. In other words, it isn’t an

You can have non-healthcare applications of biology (e.g. agriculture, materials) and non-bio applications in healthcare (e.g. patient management systems). It’s not a great definition.

What was the contextual awareness here? Are you just talking about personality and cultural fit or is there something more? You’ve had a go at this but I’m looking for a concrete example.

Most algorithms questions only prove one thing: whether a candidate has brushed up on algorithms beforehand. That has some usefulness, being a proxy measure for conscientiousness, but offers little beyond that. Maybe that they’re able to fo

I love this comment. My hunch with regard to neural nets is that we’ve got something that looks like biology, and has a certain level of efficacy, but is missing a lot of the finer details that we’re unaware of in biology. Right now we’re j

Apparently my direct experience gets downvotes. I literally use light themed apps in low light conditions every day and have never experienced any discomfort that could be called eye strain. For at least some set of people it simply does no

They’re supposed to reduce eye strain, but personally I’ve never experienced eye strain from any colour scheme, and suspect it has more to do with the eyesight of the user than the colours involved.

I don’t think there is any reason to apologise, those of us without visual impairments can easily overlook accessibility. I’m glad you pointed it out, hopefully developers of dark theme only products take this on board.

If you want a non-linear function that can be produced optically, consider an evanescent wave[1], as used in TIRF microscopy. Whether this is suitable in practise as an activation function I couldn’t say, though the curve does to my eye loo

You would have spent just as much on amazon if it paid it’s fair share of tax. I fail to see how their shareholders taking less profit would decrease your desire to consume. Out of curiosity, what motivates you to defend a multinational com

I’m kind of blown away by the comments this is getting. Do people actually not realise that every other company also pays their employees and also happen to pay corporation tax? Meaning that comparatively Amazon is paying massively less? Ho

We’re into territory of ‘why should companies pay tax’ here. This is a longer conversation than I care to have, I believe it is self evident that they should, and that large ones shouldn’t be able to get away with paying none simply because

Because the tax system isn’t designed to be based solely around income tax. In order to make up the missing funds where corporation tax ought to be, personal taxation would have to be considerably higher, which would also mean that employee

It’s a figure of speech you may not have encountered before, relatively common in British English. But quite apart from that figure of speech, the CEOs and senior management of megacorps that don’t pay tax in such an outrageous way ought to

It’s criminal, but the tax system is designed to let them get away with it. Tax needs to be radically overhauled. If any US company complains that they can’t afford to pay their taxes and make a profit at the same time, fine. Let them leave

My first thought is a relationship with glutamate excitotoxicity. Fronto-temporal dementia is known to be related to glutamate. If that’s lumped in as part of the dementia cohort that may help explain the result.

Actually what I was getting at was pricing - customers who are used to getting something for free will always think that any charge is outrageous. In non-tech examples people think that what are reasonable prices are gouging etc. Not that g

I believe the parent’s point was that running a business that is self-sustaining is actually a difficult endeavour, and doing what looks like ‘squeezing customers’ from the outside is actually what the business needs to do to survive. I thi
