I grew up in Australia with metric, with parents and grandparents who grew up with imperial units. Though it seems things happened differently in Australia as my parents (and possibly grandparents too) converted to thinking in metric at lea

The majority of luxury models of European cars are made for export. Not to say they don't drive there (of course they do), but it's often quicker to travel by train so a lot of people do so, even though they own a car.

Unless you're lucky enough to live in a country (like where I live) where public health care will cover your expenses. :) In any case you could argue that the driver of the vehicle is responsible for your expenses since they hit you. Unfort

It is the only uninterrupted motorway from the east to west sides of Melbourne, but not the only core arterial. There are other roads you can use to get from one side of town to the other. A lot of traffic using the tunnels is just commuter

Ah yeah, that makes sense. Thanks. I remember those days all too clearly. Everyone assumed that because Microsoft dominated Desktop computing that they would be able to leverage that into any future platforms. Even then, the higher usage of

I noticed that as well, though they no longer have the image of Bill Gates with fire (I think?) coming out the side of his face for all Microsoft related stories. E.g. http://web.archive.org/web/19990209091342/http://www.slashdo...

My account there is five digits as well (I probably didn't sign up straight away). The ironic thing is that I was probably about 15 years old myself when I started visiting Slashdot.

You can easily apply to get your British citizenship back. I suspect they'd automatically reissue it, unless you've committed a crime or something perhaps. Of course it'd never be guaranteed. Reading between the lines though, I think its mo

Really? I've never really associated Australia Day with eating meat, but if we were going to organise something on that day a barbecue would be quite likely. But that's probably true of any day where we'd be organising a family gathering. I

They have to measure vehicle speed accurately and in such a way that will stand up to scrutiny in court. So not just your run of the mill consumer type camera. I like your joke nonetheless. :)

Only a $40 fine... that's a bargain! It does make it seem silly that people would respond by recking the cameras. I wonder if it's more a case that some people will vandalise anything they can. (Here in Australia we pay at least $200 for a

It seems all that iMessage really does is enable users to discover connectivity through an alternative means and enable communication through that means. There's no reason you couldn't use the same mechanism to discover a JID/XMPP ID.

I first installed Debian in 1999. I remember when Potato came out and was all the rage. :) The installer certainly was intimidating though once I got my head around dselect it made sense. I don't think they even use dselect on the installer

This probably has more to do with the massive antenna (also known as a radio telescope) here on earth that are used to pick up the signal. Fortunately a few such antenna exist around the globe, so Mars should be in view of one of these ante

Wouldn't there be a problem with vendor support? Presumedly you'd have something in the contract where they'd fix things that break when it's their fault. That would include hardware and firmware. For the later, they might just insist that
