BitTorrent Sync seems to have done a really good job of making a decentralized system easy to use. Their pre-shared-key method of connecting computers is really simple for people to understand, and supports a wide variety of potential use

I feel the same way. I've been working on an open source clone of btsync because I don't feel like closed-source products can be trusted. I've just documented the protocol so far, so there's no working code yet, but it&

The problem with an LCD screen on a watch is that you have to wake up the device to see the time. As far as I can tell that is the case with this device too. Watch the video here at the 2:00 mark to see it power off: http://revi

You can do this with chrome using the --user-data-dir option, which works fantastically well. For my work gmail I have the following shortcut: chromium-browser --user-data-dir=~/.profiles/work-mail-profile -app= https://

I have a friend that backs up his photos to my computer using a combination of ecryptfs, rdiff-backup, and rsync. It goes something like this: mount -t ecryptfs ~/.photos-backup-crypted ~/photos-backup rdiff-backup ~&#x

Another good source of fixed-in-the-past yet unpredictable data is the closing price of a collection of stocks from the previous day. This would make verification easier to automate.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but since the video cards share the same thermal core, I'm not sure they are going to be easy to upgrade anymore.

The idea of this comic is that it's not worth spending dozens of hours (say, over a year) customizing your work environment in order to save just a few hours during that same time period. There are other factors at play besides the wall clo

Thanks for the feedback. Rendering a grid would be easy to do and would help a lot. I am debouncing the scroll events right now and haven't tried making the timing more aggressive so that it doesn't sit at white for as long as it does. Ri

I've been working on a problem that this browser extension would solve really well. I've got a photo gallery with a hundred thousand photos in it where I implemented near-infinite scroll by creating a really tall div and then drawing about

I can see why this would be annoying when a project is first being set up, but once things are underway I much prefer having individual emails for each event. The advantage comes when you only scan the subject line for each notification. F

clamav is GPL and has a virus database. I used it at a previous job to scan email and a samba file share. I couldn't find a download link but if you install freshclam it will download the signatures for you.

That's incorrect. The URI library will parse the URL into a hostname, username, and password. Only the hostname is sent to the DNS server. The username and password are sent in the "Authorization" HTTP header, which will be encrypted.

Since DNS records change rarely, it's trivial to have multiple active DNS servers for a domain. In normal deployments, DNS doesn't have a single point of failure. It does have "weak consistency", like you say, but that doesn't matter if t

A few years ago I lost my phone while hiking, at about 10,000 feet in elevation, which I didn't discover until back down the mountain. It was raining and so I figured it was ruined. The next day, just as I was about to have my employer ca

Every time the donation bar for wikipedia comes up, I think about making a project like this to reduce their bandwidth and server costs. I have no idea if something ad-hoc would work for their workload (they may have way too long of tail).

For large projects, it'd probably make more sense to rewrite the critical code sections in C. rubyinline makes this really easy, and ruby C extensions aren't that bad either. One time on a contracting gig I had some code that was interacti

If you take investment money then I believe that's how your investors will define success, since it's the best way for them to get a ROI. If you bootstrap then in my opinion profitability is how I'd define success.
