I have no experience in this so take my opinion with a grain of salt but what about charging for support contracts? While the project is open source and anybody could make changes/fixes it isn't always an option for a company to h

I also started doing this and I believe that I found LeanPub from you years back. I started in 2013 doing a book on XML and C# and made ~$20 from it. I never finished and never marketed. That book idea got picked up by Apress and the full n

I think as the language grows more mainstream traction you'll see people from other languages gravitate towards Elixir instead of just people from Ruby. I do feel like an outsider as I recently moved to Elixir after doing 6 years of C#

My favorite is the Hindley-Milner type system algorithm: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindley%E2%80%93Milner_type_sy... It is what is used in ML based languages to infer type and apparently Haskell uses it a bit too

I think the golden age of arcade gaming has been over for quite some time. Consoles and PC gaming have taken the need of the arcade away from a lot of people. Consoles and PCs are now the target for games rather than arcade cabinets. That s

Government agencies and national labs would hire Mathematics/Science PhDs. But without knowing what you consider esoteric it would be hard to put together a more detailed list.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that it has been a couple years since I implemented this and so my memory may be a bit hazy but here we go... We sent XML that was signed with public/private keys and we just used XPath to f

At one of my jobs we used a 3rd party library for .NET to do our licensing but then we decided to roll our own. By rolling our own we got the benefit of doing things that wouldn't be available in commercial solutions. For instance, we

In a sense, yes. I know Ionic uses Cordova to create it's applications. I'm not sure what other frameworks use it as a building block as well.

I had never really finished a side project until recently. First one was something I was going to sell. It took over a year because of changing UI and redoing a lot of stuff (unnecessarily) but I managed some sort of soft launch. My most re

In the Chicago area it isn't that hard at all, provided you know Java or .NET. I know people who have had no problem getting jobs here and they were less than stellar developers (to put it nicely)

How about for app development? I got a small Windows 10 Chinese tablet that I want to use for testing Windows 10 UWP apps but don't want to open it (haven't had time to use it yet) if it wouldn't be worth it.
