Alpine in Diskless mode is the closest I can think of as a good way of doing this. Also the Windows ADK to make a custom Windows PE is how HBCD is made to load a windows desktop with a bunch of tools off a CDROM

A 6c / 12t Dedicated Server with 32GB of ram is 65$ a month with OVH I do get that it is a bare server, but if you deploy even just bare containers to it, you would be saving a good bit of money and get better performance from it.

Garry's Mod + Wiremod is really easy to get into if you use Basic Gates or even Expressions, Its how I learned to program when I was 12 (back in Gmod 9)

I would say Garry's Mod + Lua Scripting / WireMod Easy to get into since its rather old at this point and its easy to get bootstrapped with simple logic in WireMod, Its how I learned programming, has multiplayer and really support

Looking at [2], They did not. Only has FWRITE and FREAD, later on in the linked v7 they added FPIPE, not sure how TTY's are handled back then, but I bet it was a device driver of some kind with the real basic BIOS those systems had.
