You _can_ put a dot at the end, but it's not required https://news.ycombinator.com./ It's to clearly identify a domain as a FQDN and not as a subdomain of your search domain.

I was on a ferry ship from Italy to Greece where they had paid sattelite Internet via WiFi. The WiFi AP was at first a captive portal. You could buy Internet access with cash at the reception or you could pay online. For that they had to e

It makes a lot of sense, if we think about how the protocol works. Without caching, I assume every client would send every query in it's entirety to the root server, right? Since a single zone can have multiple labels ({abc.def}.ghi.ex

That's what I thought of as well. Data can be presented in many ways to show many meanings at first sight. If charts would be generated in number of unique NAMEs in relation to TTL, readers would probably get a diffetent feeling. Or ma

CNLohr at Youtube did this to use ESP8266 at absurdly low power usage, only waking up every couple of minutes to transmit a 802.11 frame without connection handshake. https://youtu.be/I3lJWcRSlUA

Why would a TLS library even parse punycode? The sole reason we still use this hack is so that core infrastructure does not have to change when we use internationalized domains. If TLS libraries, DNS servers, HTTP servers, ... needed to be

Signal is usually lost going across a tranformer, from one winding to anotner. But usually whole residential areas, consisting of many streets, share a 24kV to low voltage 220V transformer. Meaning you and your neighbour in most cases share

Commas and periods are a great part of my native language (of course they are essential in many languages), yet I couldn't find a way to set up comma and period to show on my dad's new work iPhone the way they appear on Android --

Ohhh, thanks! It's actually quite a nice symbol (reminds me of the google translate icon [0]), maybe browsers need some meta tags to indicate that "this page is available in another language" instead of offering a google tran

Our gymnasium extensively uses Microsoft products - Outlook, Windows, Office, ASP.NET. We've had some proprietary software before for writing on digital touchscreen displays in classrooms, but it was ditched in favour of OneNote. Now s

Unfortunately the essay is translated to Slovene for me and the translation is terrible. I couldn't find a button to force the original version of the essay, is this intentional or did I just miss the button?

I stand corrected, sorry. Emulating some other proprietary software really shouldn't be a paragraph in something we call an "open standard". Thank you for the links.

Correlation does not imply causation. The fact that Libreoffice can open binary proprietary formats does not automatically imply that all formats it uses are binary and proprietary. DOCX is an open standard.

The biggest bank in Slovenia also requires an app, but I wrote a webapp that implements the reverse engineered protocol the bank uses in the mobile app (the protocol is basically a TOTP implementation brought from a private company).
