you can either fall back to natural gas peaker plants or grid-battery. Batteries keep getting cheaper, too

I get where you're coming from but in 2024, solar is the cheapest source of power on earth, and wind is second-cheapest. Economics and survival are aligned for once, we just gotta actually build the new system and deprecate the old

cloudflare comes off as absolutely cowardly in this: they don’t even have the person’s manager on the call, they claim it’s a personal performance issue but when pressed it’s actually the whole department getting canned. It’s a bad look

I’ve heard variations on this story a few times, successful company swallows failing company and gets infected by failing-culture. Isn’t that what happened to Netscape?

I don’t see how fossil can be considered efficient when you have to consider digging it up, shipping it around, refining it, shipping it around again, burning it, piping the electricity for long distances. and if you want to argue that sola

I’m convinced that “density” is not a helpful metric here. There’s plenty of diffuse energy, and it’s advantageous to collect it near where it’s used, rather than make big pipes and ship it around

I am hoping that the modern world is not one single system that can crash all at once, but is rather many systems, such that a crash leaves room for new things to grow bigger

combination of two things; first, we came up with new ways to get oil out of the ground, so it extended the deadline considerably. second, economic growth and oil burning decoupled, so instead of needing more and more oil we hit a steady nu

I've been thinking about this a lot, and I have two solutions: * distribute on Testflight and never actually do a real release * make an HTML app that works well on mobile, and can be cached for offline Gradually I think I'm comin

I have a 2021 Chevy Bolt, it is not a luxury car, it was hella cheap. My sister-in-law drives for Uber/Lyft and bought a Tesla model 3 because the total cost of ownership is lower than any gas car

I’ve got a similar one, yet to be written, about “cold computing”. How do you compute if you’re on a limited solar+battery installation? what if your CPU wakes up and you have only a couple of hours of runtime? What if you only can turn on

when Ruby was up and coming, people compared it to Perl a lot, but I never saw the similarities. I guess they both have first-class regexp. But ruby has very standard semantics, almost interchangeable with Python and Javascript in most case

I used Ruby professionally in the early 2010s and that sucked all the joy out of it. Gigantic Rails monoliths in that era were just unmaintainable brambles. I probably would rather write Ruby again for side-projects but the ecosystem just i
