No. Most gamers now have a different definition of roguelike vs roguelite. They consider action games to fall into both categories and the distinguishing factor is only that "roguelikes" have no metaprogression. This is totally di

Right. The only thing that can potentially carry over across DCSS runs is a "player ghost", which actually makes the game much harder rather than easier. In any case that's a very small part of the game.

Pretty thorough but with one disappointing gap (disappointing for me at least). While it does cover my game Dumuzid (probably the first roguelike focused around multitile monsters) it skips over another I made a couple years later which is

Considering they're removing food completely yea. I do think most of the changes are thoughtful and make sense but sanding all the edges off makes the game seem a little bland these days.

I can always count on HN to take an uplifting story, ignore its contents, and complain about a perfectly reasonable headline. Anyway, when was a kid I used to think retirement would be the perfect opportunity to do a massive amount of gamin

Who still uses analog clocks though? If you don't care for modern tech, just wake up with the sun and you're on time anyway. The idea of keeping track of this system in software sounds terrifying though. Getting rid of DST would s

The abstract is indeed fascinating and I'm reading through the full text, which is so far mostly easy to understand for a layman. The high number of typos throws me a bit though. Amusingly they even misspell their central idea "Ov

I'm fairly certain compressing random data is nonsensical. In fact there's a cash prize challenge for doing it that has been unmet for 20 years. https://marknelson.us/posts/2012/10/09/the-random

I admit to not having read his book and I think his argument is technically "airtight". I will grant that. But the real problem, besides me strongly believing 1 and 2 are true, is that Bostrom (or more charitably, his fans) are co

I'm fine with saying it's unknowable. Likewise with the existence of God, it's hard to falsify but very easy to point out that the certain interpretations sounds extraordinarily silly and the proponents who claim to be certai

The solution to ban onion futures trading seems shortsighted. Couldn't this happen again with another type of future contract? Was there really nothing else that Kosuga did that was illegal or could be made illegal?

Yea, just from reading about Dreams it seems basically like a game engine more than a game, albeit a very accessible one that also highlights user generated content prominently a la Mario Maker. Game creation tools have never been very acce

25k? Interesting. I would guess about 2,500 copies based on your Steam review count. Did you sell a lot more on Switch or something? I really would be surprised if an ASCII game could sell 20k on Switch.

Both Cogmind and Caves of Qud have optional tiles that look like little more than ASCII. Door in the Woods is ASCII only and has sold ~5,000 copies in about a month. In fact this game has inspired me to try to work on a pure ASCII roguelike

It would be cool to see the cells checked as well. To someone unfamiliar with BFS, the demo makes it seem like the process of finding the solution doesn't involve exploring any other tiles than the solution itself.
