"The Estates" are the corpse of SCO, and "The Trustee" is the court-appointed trustee for The Estates. So, it would seem that IBM is going to pay $14 million to the corpse of SCO.

Largely just re-publishing Intel's slides, but still interesting. "Intel’s Gracemont Small Core Eclipses Last-Gen Big Core Performance" compares to Skylake (2015) core performance which seems a bit more stale than "last-

Huh, I naively expected constants to be loaded similar to 32-bit arm, where usually they come from a table of constants placed just after the function code itself. But both clang and gcc emit a series of mov + 3 movk for arbitrary constants

Missing is the analysis of the amount of entropy in an unaided "three random words" password. I'll try: people are lousy at random picking. Their choices are highly likely to come from the most common 1000 words, and very ve

Maybe I've just been away from C++ for too long (~2 years) but I wasn't able to follow what was going on there. What does `sizeof` have to do with anything (doesn't work without it, though)? I would have enjoyed an article

_Why_ is it faster? (particularly on Linux, I see you're using syscalls on mac that mac's cp doesn't, since apple doesn't really maintain their unix userspace)

At $OLDJOB we used to use nfs extensively, and a common desire was to run some command on the system where the files actually resided, after navigating there (with cd in a local terminal). To that end, we developed a script called "yon

I wonder if they investigated a format for relative coordinates that used 3 bytes .. in the example ivg it would potentially save a lot of bytes, but at the cost of less exact coordinates.

Yes,-ish. However, there's also the question of what operations are efficient. (Diff feels very performant in git but) maybe having the diffs as the first-class objects enables doing something efficiently that git doesn't do. (p

I'm relatively confident I had MP3 decoding software running on a 486 circa 1994/5. Even today, mpg123's website states "Plays Layer 3 in stereo on an AMD-486-120Mhz or (of course) a faster machine." and of course

I skimmed the paper. It looks like gate size grows as the square of the number of bits. I was unable to tell how the size of the "multimode memory" scales with the problem size, but that could just be a problem with how quickly I

It seems likely you're measuring something other than what you intended to measure, like the start-up time of the Python interpreter, time to byte-compile Python source, etc. fib(40) itself runs in 1.1us/loop on this Ryzen 3700X
