Our speed limits are actually similar for similar designed roads in urban areas, 50km, 70km, 80km and 100km. A lot of the road network is 100km national speed limit, and you wouldn't typically drive that fast on US roads of a similar d

I don't think religion is the major factor there. Losing religion is lagging behind these social changes. I mean, anecdotally, I'm not religious and my wife is fiercely anti-religions and we have 3 kids and she doesn't work.

Have you been to other countries? American speeding seemed pretty sedate. I recall driving a bit too fast around some country roads in CA and people would pull over and let me past. That would never happen here, and I'd also be the slo

Do atheists destroy women? Or do you mean women no longer filling some role you think they should because of what your religion prescribes?

I don't really know what this means, I'm not American. I would say that all these people are more right of centre if liberal means left wing.

I totally agree with this stance. Among my peer group a couple of folks own a second property they rent out and the "if we didn't where would our tenant live?" vibe is bizarre. They'd live in a house, maybe even being ab

We do know what happened though. Boeing used an insider to pass information about their competitors bids and then gave them a high paying job with a large sign on bonus. They got the contract killed because they knew they could work up a fu

Reading more around it, Northrop Grumman won the initial contract with an Airbus model and Boeing complained, got the proposal rewritten in their favour. They had an official who passed them info and got a highly inflated contract written,

Funny this subject came up on yesterday's BBC QI show. I liked the poetic description of consciousness not as the driver of thought but as a compass needle that points the way the thoughts were going anyway. I've not believed in f

I bought a large corner sofa in the US in 2013 for 4k from a store in Santa Rosa. Still using it, have moved it to Europe and then New Zealand and it has put up with 3 kids and a multitude of cats. At some point we'll get it re-upholst

No I don't believe so. Inequality is a metric that you can apply to any system. A communist system could have high inequality if it rewarded some skills with a big imbalance. Capitalism as an economic system doesn't really say muc

Every time we get an article about EVs we get commenters here who just like to list the pitfalls, every time, over and over. It's pretty boring. No-body is forcing anyone to buy an EV (yet), so each of us can decide on the merits. I wo

It's pretty insane. How is the US going to get back to having a functional government? One side or the other needs to win a significant majority or the two sides need to start working together. I can't really see either happening.

One notable difference I think with many malls in Europe and other countries, compared to America, is that they tend to be integrated with the surrounding town/shopping area. They are less likely to be a standalone place you drive to.
