I've long sworn off Facebook, and have always been rather active on Twitter. I just hope G+ gets a good, functional mobile layout. I'm not sure how I feel about the current one yet. Everyone I know is on Facebook, and nearly everyone is on

Agreed; it's a great suggestion! In fact, I think it'd be great of Reddit to support this as a native feature, so I just made a post on /r/suggestions/!

They pipe up occasionally, just not so much idle banter, as they don't want to be talking when someone vital says something, and step all over it.

I have to agree that the reason I prefer HN so often to other sites (particularly Reddit) is that often, I'm just not looking for humor. Not everything has to have a joke with it. Sometimes I just want to read, or have, a serious conversati

There are actually answering machines for the deaf. But to use then you have to either have a tty machine, or call it through a relay service (711). But most online forms won't accept phone numbers that include the extra digits. Conversely,

I won't pretend to know about literacy rates among deaf people, but I want to underline jacobr's point here: ASL is not "English with hands" any more than spoken Japanese is "English with different sounds". It's a different language, with d

Warning: A long meandering post, about multiple things, because my day job is at a relay center, taking calls from/to deaf people. I absolutely understand his fear of letting a relay operator help him here. Now, obviously this fellow can wr

I completely buy the idea that there's potential for new learning tools in tablets (or any computing device over books) but has anyone actually done it? Has anyone moved from potential and successfully effected this? At the very least tell

I think you're right. A purchase of this size is bound to be able to new a few wins, even if it's via consolidation. And who knows, maybe iTunes/Amazon has convinced him that "content" has a future.

I actually completely forgot my bank had a shitty website. Thanks to Mint.com's app. (And before I get accused of shilling here, though I've never seen that claim made against someone, I just want to say: they should want to get it right be

I think you kind of answered your own question there. It's a very highly rated site, as far as that goes, that's very easy to place links on. A link here that actually gets used is very valuable to the discerning-but-foolable algorithms th

No one? (Or the guarantor, who then isn't paid back.) That's what I meant by "bankruptcy." Maybe, if they had "skin in the game", they'd be more inclined to be more responsible in their lending. Or maybe the answer comes in capping the amou

Here's a revolutionary idea: let's make bankruptcy easier. I've paid more than I borrowed, and I still owe more than I've paid. I have dozens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt, and I'm on the doorstep of defaulting on some of it.

I don't want to put words in permulis' mouth, but, I think a reasonable assumption is he's concerned of the option you don't list: They won't get by. They'll die. I think that's why a lot of people do it.

Given I don't know your nationality, it wasn't an attempt to woo you by comparing them to anyone. I'm simply saying "they feel disenfranchised, so they're acting out" is kind of stating the obvious to almost any group. One could just as eas

Amen. I worked at a TV station for years, and the thought of borrowing a camera (literally asking my boss for permission, because I wouldn't do it without,) was enough to have him checking up on me for months.

I think the grandparent post meant this as a replacement to DVD, not all sales. So you're replacing the 120M component of the total, not the total 500M. So we're talking closer to 40M people who feel the film is worth $5. (Admittedly grandp

Yes, there has to be a reason. Of course, it's very easy for an officer to say "He was weaving in traffic", or claiming you were speeding when you were not, or simply lie about you using a turn signal. I'll bet most people have a story like
