Almost everything that technology touched has been 'dehumanized' in some way or the other. It was initially email. How can I take something seriously if its sent as an email, and when the sender has virutally zero cost in doing so

This could become, but I believe the author intended to show a usecase with this blogpost. If you look closely, the results are far from satisfactory. As methods and techniques evolve, this can become a cloud service.

You're right. Google changed the way they did images a while back to prevent email image marketers who used to track when the user opened an email using a 1pixel transparent image downloads.

With ad revenues drying up (Adblock, general lack to interest to ads) Google is forced to look at other avenues to make money and selling stuff to people is a great way for that.
