My favourite quote from the article: "a guy named Rahul, a slender 27-year-old Englishman of Indian extraction who's 50 percent hair and 50 percent brain." Which is a hilarious description of YC/HN's own http://news.ycombinator.com/user?i

That's separate from the Google Fiber for Communities project. I haven't seen any news on that since all the applications were submitted. I'm sure the selection / due diligence / contracting process is ridiculously complex, though! I woul

Damn, I'm an idiot. Make that direct investment costs of 208 startups is <$5million. (Order of magnitude error; shouldn't have been multitasking when I wrote the comment!) Still, YC has still returned (and potentially as much as quadr

My back of the envelope calculation over all YC acquisitions so far has them at ~$12million returned. (Over half of that is from Heroku.) That could arguably be anywhere from $5-$20million based on your dilution assumptions, though. And d

Two dozen is only about 10% of the 208 YC startups to date. I'm surprised that that few have done a Series A. I would have thought it would be a much higher percentage.

Seriously, come to London if you want to see this all the time. Walk through Mayfair and you'll see Porsches, Astons, Ferraris, Rolls-Royces, Bentleys parked on the street all over. It's crazy... Sometimes it's not contempt, it's just wha

Agree, but: 1) They're a huge, huge outlier 2) Any of Renaissance's funds are not nearly as scalable as a passive index fund 3) As a hedge fund will still take a big chunk out of returns as fees

Interesting. I've played around with Kayak's API, but has anyone used it for any projects? I'm curious what others think. As for the IPO... good luck to them!

Google doesn't have a Dropbox product, but Google has put together a series of APIs so that you can create a similar product of your own off their infrastructure. http://code.google.com/apis/storage/ It was presented at Google I/O 2010; t

I would guess (I certainly don't know anything) that contests like these will open outside the US when the GoogleTV devices are available outside the US. I'm hoping that's coming soon...

There are times where I wish HN had a one-time-daily-use +10 vote button, because I would use it here. The post was obviously satire, and I personally thought it well-written and hilarious. Fundamentally, a technical startup needs to event
