Another cute thing about Wilson Hall at Fermilab is that the front doors faces precisely due north. Not because they were constructed with painstaking precision but because the physicists have redefined Fermilab's coordinate system such tha

Well if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of speed I think I have a pretty good heuristic algorithm you can use: Step 1: Find a maximal point, by this a mean a point `p' s.t. no point has x >= p.x and y >= p.y. (such a point clearly

Is the BBC considering using end to end encryption for its iPlayer service? It seems to me that they could really stop a lot of this throttling in its tracks by preventing deep packet inspection.

True, although in actuality if everyone just went online and tried to download a terabyte of data. TCP back off would be the reason that things came to a crawl, which is a user side thing.

The real question is: will this be a feature of the quality that facebook has been doing lately? Or is it going to be unreliable for a long time before it actually works?

I think everyone's vaporware senses are tingling a bit. But let's think for a second, why can't this work. Really the only issue I can see is keeping the video interface smooth enough to allow for gameplay. The problem is that they need to

I honestly can't see a way to think about computers as a natural evolution of the book format of presenting information. They use text that's true but that's pretty much where the comparison halts. Computers are capable of taking in substan
