RTO is a real disadvantage in hiring all the people who are posting on HN in the middle of the workday about RTO instead of, y'know, working.

Which non-538 models consistently outperform 538's models? EDIT: (cause I can't reply to the below comment) my question was what model beats 538, not which betting market beats 538. yeah, duh, the Vegas line beats 538, because i

538 absolutely is horserace coverage, but unlike basically all the other election coverage, it's rigorous, impartial, and intellectually honest.

As opposed to horserace election coverage, which is the single biggest focus of all of American journalism for the year or so leading up to an election... which is of greater journalistic value?

If you watch an old Saturn V launch video, they have the same slowness at liftoff. Really gives a sense of of how gigantic the thing is. You've stuck rockets onto the bottom of a skyscraper and are trying to loft it into the air.

If you don't believe me about how weapons safety on set is supposed to work, take it from an actual professional armorer (below). Notice there's nothing in here about it being the actor's job to make sure the gun is safe, nev

How do you imagine actors act out scenes that involve shooting each other with guns if they can't put their finger on the trigger, point guns at each other, or use guns loaded with blanks? Baldwin seems like he's personally kind o

The similarity is that Alec Baldwin is neither a gun expert nor a car expert. He's an actor. When actors deal with dangerous props -- and all kinds of props can be dangerous in unexpected ways -- there are (supposed to be) professional

Is anyone alleging that Baldwin loaded the gun with live ammo that he pulled off his own belt? Every account I've read has the armorer loading it. Curious to read other versions though.

You can make up whatever rules you want and say "Period" afterward for emphasis. That doesn't make those rules real or relevant to how movies are made.

Executive Producer usually means: this person helped make this movie happen (e.g. helped line up financing, pitched the movie to the studio), but has no direct role in overseeing day-to-day work on the movie. An actor's job is acting.

They were using blanks on set so Baldwin would have to be able to (a) reliably differentiate between blanks and live rounds and (b) re-check the gun for live rounds before each take. Making sure props are safe to use in a scene is just not

A lot of movie scenes involve pointing a gun in the general direction of the camera, and there's generally people standing around the camera (cameraman, etc.). So pointing a gun at people is pretty much unavoidable. That's why the

They don't have "paid gigs" there. They bring in tons of subscription revenue, and Substack gave them advances against that subscription revenue. In each case, they quickly earned out the advance.

Everything in life is tradeoffs. American software engineers get paid more than basically anyone else in the world, but we also have less job security. What's preferable just depends on your risk aversion vs marginal utility of money.
