I've been frustrated by some time that there's not a generic "look but not touch" function available to 3rd party programs. I'm a lot less concerned about a 3rd party leaking info about my assets than I am about the

Google Voice is GREAT for non-profits. For my son's Cub Scout Pack and my kids' soccer club I paid the money to get permanent numbers for them both. Now they each have a permanent number that goes just to voicemail. The messag

Google Voice has been awesome for us with a little Obihai box. I use it every day to check on my mom (who has medical issues) and we have glitches occasionally but they are almost always cleared up by re-dialing. It let us replace our $40&

There are some programmers on Hacker News who probably are paid more than I'm guessing both companies combined made. As I remember it (could be wrong now), SEA was two programmers and PKWare was Phil Katz (and his mom). "The lea

The article kind of glosses over the battle with System Enhancement Associates. As a sysop (long time since I used that word), ARC was extremely popular. Then PKarc came out and it generated files that were more compact but kept the ext

Was curious what would happen if you set the firmware to only boot from the startup disk and it crashed ... Seems like MacOS does the reasonable thing and prompts for the firmware password if you use a different disk. https://sup

Replacement batteries are relatively inexpensive and reliable. I've had good luck with replacing the battery on a Roomba and a Mint (now part of iRobot) via 3rd party manufacturers.

I was surprised (and pleased) to see Apple add "rename" to the file menu in Finder for El Capitan. Coming from Windows, I found the "click on a file to rename it" very unintuitive. Evidently a lot of other people did,

As an old guy, I have other committments besides work. Family, non-profits, etc. It's helpful not to have to worry about those things as well as moving across the country for a lot less pay in a job that might not succeed.
