I moved off of Google Calendar and Google Reader (and have never used GMail) for exactly these reasons several months ago. I do not want to be dependent on free services or ones that might go away. I know this could be true for any compan

Well, what he is likely referring to is the fact that the Air Force has majorly cut and consolidated support fields in the past decade. There used to be finance personnel at every base to help you if you had any problems with your regular

Former USAF officer here, and what you said absolutely applies to the Air Force. It trickles down to the enlisted ranks too. I think right around the time I got out (2010) there was a big push to cut back on useless training AF-wide but I

Great article, I am close to doing something similar myself, except with Hakyll and a Linode node instead of Github Pages. Pandoc (what Hakyll uses on the backend) gives the Markdown input a bit more flexibility than normal, I think.

I think Eve did two things to embrace their online economy - hired a real-life economist to oversee changes and study it, and brought buying and selling of timecards with in-game currency into the game directly. Previously, you could buy t

Do you mind laying out your specific concerns? I'm not the developer of news:yc but I use it every day and like it a lot, and I think the user experience is fine and have never felt hampered or awkward using it.

To me it's about the existence of the nil pointer itself. If there is a pointer, it is guaranteed to be valid by the type system. The other case (which would be represented by a nil or null pointer in other languages) is represented by th

Sure, but what's wrong with his approach? POSIX sh supports all the things you need to do 'if GNU grep run this, else if BSD grep run that' - functions, case statements, conditionals. He's not talking about building up major libraries in
