Modern cars. Older cars don’t spy in you or need subscriptions to bypass arbitrary hardware restrictions. But newer cars are ‘safer’, so it’s kind of a crappy tradeoff

The difference with cars is it’s a lot easier to build yourself a vehicle. Used cars and parts and kits and how-tos are everywhere. It’s so much simpler than a web browser.

Same. I even use gmail in the browser on Firefox/iOS, and all it does is give me a splash page saying the app is better, then I click through.

At least with ledger cli, the format for a transaction is simple enough that a just make a script that reads the CSV that I can export from my bank’s website. But to your point, it’s still a lot of customization and manual work, I never kee

Yes- it’s pretty messed up seeing those wealthy carnivore animals systematically breed, cage and murder billions of the other animals just so it can be conveniently purchased on-demand at their animal grocery store. Factory farming is prett

For me, writing on paper provides insights that I just don’t get from a computer. Writing outside the lines, doodles and swirls on the edges as I ruminate. Adding geometric borders around certain areas, arrows pointing at important things.

There is also scientific evidence that hand-writing down your goals on paper is a positive factor in achieving those goals (this was on a recent episode of huberman lab)

I always thought being intelligent and lazy was superior. Why waste my time doing something if I don’t have to? You can ‘clever’ your way out of a lot of hard work and get the same results.

Just upvoting this isn't enough. I work in a large .NET shop. I only wish there was just the option of building admin or LOB apps with any of the three you listed above. Sure, there's some consistency in the tech stack, but I do n

Good point. They’re all just tools and patterns. The actual tools used _could_ save some time, but experience plus the capacity to reason about software is a bigger deal. The article just made me think of some devs that I’ve worked with tha

This perspective is really interesting to me. I’d be interested in knowing what people find problematic with it. I used to unit test all the components individually. But these days I test with most of the componentry wired up, only mocking

It would be interesting to know how long the author has been developing software. For me, this is the kind of stuff I questioned in my first few years. After I productionalized a few real world systems for a business, the whole “dev street

Maybe someone correct me if I’m wrong, but VS for mac just looked like a fork of the Xamarin IDE I used to use on Linux w Mono. I tried it and was not impressed.

This is worth it. I purged my collection years ago. All I kept were my top 3 or so favorite artists, which were too obscure to replace, and bands I did shared gigs with or played in, and a few of my favorite studio albums I recorded. I star

That doesn’t work for everyone though. I work for an employer because I don’t want to spend time running a business. It’s just not worth it for a lot of us. I don’t even ever want to be a manager. I’d rather just put in my 40 hours as an in

This is a thoughtful approach, I like it. I take this one step further- I like to start some web prototypes with a single HTML file (Single File App). All you need is an editor and a browser. Jsdoc and copilot make this pretty rapid now too
