SmartOS is really just a distribution of illumos; so are OmniOS, OpenIndiana, etc. We are all very similar as we push and pull from our common source base. When Oracle took the source closed again, they essentially forked their own private

I don't know that Oracle Solaris supports the Linux ABI. The revival of Linux ABI support in zones (containers) is a SmartOS (and illumos) thing, and we've diverged significantly from Solaris at this point.

It's honestly pretty difficult to take an Oracle lawyer's word on what would be good or bad for open source or free software.

It is extremely disingenuous to suggest that some combination of the Linux kernel and surrounding libraries are not intentionally knocking off at least a large subset of UNIX APIs. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, which

By that logic, the Linux ecosystem should be paying a handsome sum to whatever litigious shadow is left holding the UNIX IP.

The sync(1M) command provided on many UNIX systems is often a thin wrapper around the sync(2) system call. The sync(2) entry point does not, as specified, guarantee that all inflight data _has_ been written; it's more of a guideline t

If you then expose that file system through a POSIX file system API, you have all of the same issues of underspecified or unclear behaviour that the article mentions.

At Joyent, our Triton cloud stack is built on illumos (nee Solaris) LX branded zones. We also have a Docker-compatible remote API, so not only can you run unmodified Linux binaries in containers, you can do so using the regular Docker clien

As far as I know, Oracle has not made any SPARC intellectual property available since the acquisition of Sun. The T1 and T2 lines were emphatically Sun-era products.

Yes, even if it's "just a kernel", it's still an operating system. It's a piece of software that runs in the supervisor mode of the CPU, providing system call services to user applications. The marketing copy appea

Joyent Triton also exposes a Docker API, which you use with an unmodified copy of the Docker CLI. In that sense, working with Triton is also the same as on your laptop.

Speaking from experience working on the LX brand (the Linux emulation layer for Joyent SmartOS), we would not have gotten very far with our emulation layer if we did not also faithfully emulate quite a lot of /proc. For example:
