E-mail and mailing lists are still, I think, a good tool for long-form asynchronous communication. For some things, I want the opportunity to think about my broader point for a while before I subject others to it. In response, I want to e

I'm not sure if I agree that these circular charts are more readable than flamegraphs. It seems to obscure the actual stack frame detail and make it difficult to visually compare the depth of non-adjacent stacks.

Speaking for myself, that's exactly why I work at Joyent. I believe in OS virtualisation (whether you call them zones or containers) for multi-tenancy, in high quality tools for debugging both live (DTrace) and post mortem (mdb), and

It is not outdated, but _prescient_. Any third party (company, or otherwise) that you depend on for your business can elect to make your life more difficult (or nigh on impossible) at any time. You may choose to depend on a vendor to an ex

It's important not to over-value pithy quotes from Steve Jobs (or other successful figures). For starters, it's difficult to say if this particular assertion is even well-founded; less likely still that implementing his rhetoric

If you're shipping Java software, you probably already deliver more than one class file, possibly within a JAR. I think it makes more sense to include the binary data as a regular file and load it as a resource through the class loade

I tend to find that shorter, putatively simpler bash scripts are often shorter because they don't do adequate (or, at times, any) checking of error conditions. It is deceptively easy to write a terse shell script when you assume that

A trustworthy company is always one "being acquired by Oracle" away from becoming an untrustworthy, belligerent rent-seeker. Any dependency on another company for your own business must be considered a risk to be managed.

You can't really "add" your key to a computer you don't trust, though. At best, it could destroy your USB device; at worst it could copy the contents out once you decrypt them. This may be better than using one password
