We see database migrations all the time in my line of work. Lock-in is rarely the main concern. Usually reliability, operability, and performance are what close deals. Even big enterprises regularly move between radically different architec

Yes there is a dev jar. We've removed the download for now because we are running our recent release to cloud through the QA process. Check back in a few weeks or contact us via the website and depending on what you are planning to use

Haha. Well I've wanted to focus on the kind of smooth developer experience and on-ramping that you can only get with a cloud product. That's been super fun, basically to work the experience of the product itself directly into the

You are making the same mistake the IndexedDB haters made. The standardization effort around JOSE, as far as I can tell, is about making the browser a place where you can run crypto. They want it to be composable because that's the we

The problem is that we lack a story for the future. The only coherent ones are sci-fi. It's up to the folks reading HN to build that future before this one runs out.

Yes. This isn't near the top end, more like what happens when we run benchmarks on a reasonable web infrastructure class cluster. This is still only 5 machines in each datacenter.

Calvin is a generalized consistency protocol, that we use in FaunaDB to support relational semantics (but not SQL) in our database. Multi-query transactions can be useful, but the FaunaDB query language is functional, rather than declarativ

As a bit of a veteran in the database industry, I concur (at least about the impact on Oracle's database business). There is a lot of pent-up demand for anything that offers distributed consistency. We've been seeing this demand a

The operations model is similar to most cloud databases, with metered usage. You just configure your app to use the database, and the scaling is handled for you. FaunaDB has a strong consistency, a relational data model and rich queries. T

This post focuses on ease of integration. In a future post I'll get more explicit about the thesis that there are features operational databases could offer to support serverless (FaaS) execution environments.
