This is really personal for me. As a kid, I was part of a "gifted and talented" program at my public elementary school, where I got to go to a different classroom for half a day once a week. It was the first time in my life I&#x27

I think about it like this: If I ask you to write assembler faster than what the compiler emits for one very specific CPU model, you'll pretty much always be able to do that (given enough time). But as CPUs become more complex, and com

The traditional antidote to ASLR is "known code reuse", tricks like ret2libc, ret2plt, etc. FG-ASLR helps because, even when you know where .text is, there are now N possible randomized locations for the piece of code your exploit

I love vim. I've been using it for almost 20 years now. I agree with you about code entry speed, that's not the point. I think the easiest way to put it is that vim is 0% task loading. I never have to expend any energy dealing wit

I always travel with it, personally. It's useful in other ways too, for example people in rural parts of the US can be weird about out-of-state IDs (I look young...).

In my state (CA) I would have to actually show up to the DMV in person (normally you can renew online). That's inconvenient enough I'm never going to do it, if they start requiring "real ID" I'll just use my passpor

I initially learned the Intel syntax, and preferred it for awhile. But the more I work with non-x86 CPUs, the more I prefer AT&T just because it feels less different than everything else.

Inside the continental US, if you fly a small not-turbine-engine-powered airplane yourself and only go to rural airports with no tower, it is actually legal to have no transponder (see below, 91.215(b), 91.225(b)). But, if the transponder i

Sir, this is capitalism. I've never understood that viewpoint. It's equivalent to claiming a cashier is underpaid because $7.50/hr is a tiny percentage of the sales that go through their register. The world doesn't work

I've always hated the modern C++ atomic stuff. Atomicity is not a property of the thing being accessed, it is a property of the instructions performing the access : trying to shoehorn that reality into an object-based model was wron
