Hey, the purpose of a computer is to consume electricity while running IA-mandated corporate policy enforcement and virus scanning software. That we provide users with monitors and input devices so that they can use any remaining spare CPU

Oh, I've fallen into this trap - not the technical debt so much as the getting so focused on building something cool that I ignore the business side of things (small things, such as, does anyone want this thing?). So in the end I wind

It's pretty demotivating to have "leaders" who ignore every technical expert in their organization jumping up and down, waving their arms, shouting "Don't buy that!" Happens all the time, though.

Yea, I went back to sessions (with Redis) as well. So much simpler, since all of the major web frameworks/libraries have much better support for traditional sessions than JWT... One place I still might use JWT is in service-to-service

There are few technologies I despise more than Spring. Well, maybe OSGi. Also, hibernate and JPA. I've lost so many hours of my life fighting those things. I try to stick to Clojure for most of my JVM-ing these days. Right now I&#x

How about be willing to hire experienced engineers who don't have remote experience? Every time I've applied for a remote job, this seems to have been the sticking point. I'd just like employers to start with the assumption

I sort of agree. GraphQL just seems like a solution for a small set of niche problems that's being promoted as a general REST replacement for any and all web APIs. Seems like we (as in, our industry) went through this before with ever

My 2018 Honda Clarity makes a really cheesy synthetic new-age sounding "hum" noise at low speed. I wish Honda would put out a software update to make the noise user-selectable. The intro to "The Final Countdown" in a co

I was at Clojure/conj this year and this was one of my favorite sessions of the conference. I really hope libraries like these catch on, because I hate dealing with Python.

The Powermac G3 and G4 towers were awesome. Just pull a lever and the side drops down. Everything is nice, neat, and accessible. The G5 towers were similarly functional and very nice as well, and the early Mac Pro towers were obviously b

As far as I know, the US Army still teaches land navigation using a paper map, protractor, pencil, and compass. At least they did when I was in (early 2000s). Getting caught with a GPS-capable device on the land nav course was considered c

We recently moved to a large-ish (but not huge) city and since I would be working downtown we looked at becoming urbanites (easy commute, can get rid of one of our cars, proximity to restaurants, shopping, things to do, etc.). Then we disco

I got a refurb XPS 13 9370 that still seems to be doing fine after a year (I run Fedora on it). I'd previously owned a latitude and while I thought it was a good machine, I wanted something lighter - the quad-core U-series CPUs finall

How would you define middle-age? 39 is roughly half of the current US life expectancy for a human male (~78). Barring a cure for aging coming along within the next few decades, I'm right about in the middle of my lifepsan.

Huh, floppies have been gone that long? Back when I was doing my BSCS (1998-2002), we turned in our assignments in a folder containing a printed code listing and a 3.5" floppy disk - there were better ways to move small amounts of sou
