I probably played Civ1 the most, on the Amiga back in the day. IMO, Civ II was the best in the series, and if I find myself craving a game of Civ, I go for FreeCiv. Never tried Civ VI, the last few iterations just did not hook me the way t

Ada is/was heavily used in the defense/aerospace industry. Most of these legacy maintenance requests come from defense contractors who do not want to pay top-dollar for expertise. They want to put butts-in-seats to soak up billa

I was a fairly junior software engineer at the time. And took the job only because it was 2008 and I was unemployed. Had never used Ada but the employer (rhymes with "Going") didn't seem to mind. My mother was kind of enou

I don't know, if I'm trying to create an open-source project with the intent of making something that becomes useful and popular, I'm not sure I'd want to artificially limit the number of potential contributors by pickin

I spent about 4 years of my early career working with Ada in the aerospace industry (specifically, I worked on the GPS satellite program). It was rather career-limiting because I ended up as a young engineer with a lot of experience in an

I'm the most extraordinary software engineer in my office. I mean, it's my home office, but that still counts, right?

Everyone has a number. I wouldn't want to work for Oracle either. However, if they came to me with an offer that was several multiples of my current salary, I'm not sure I could turn it down :)

I think there's going to be a run on houses in the suburbs over the next year or two, as urban decay sets in. A lot of those downtown office workers are going to keep working from home, so all of those restaurants and cafes that cater

Yea, spring boot. When 90% of what you're doing on the backend is gluing a bunch of different Java technologies together, Clojure becomes hard to justify. Fortunately, mixing JVM languages together on the same project isn't a bi

I've found CIDER superior to Cursive for Clojurescript, specifically. I use a combination of IntelliJ (with the emacs keybindings) and emacs depending on which language I'm working with. Most of my projects involve two or more l

Yea, I had one take home problem where the instructions stated "Please don't take more than 1 hour to solve." So, just once, I decided to hold myself to one hour, and barely managed to get to a solution that worked. During t

Huh, the only successful interviews I have are the ones where I'm burned out after a long, fruitless, frustrating job search. And so I walk in assuming the interview will be a waste of time and just not caring anymore. That's whe

Yep, deactivated my account just the other day and deleted the facebook app from my phone. I don't need a constant stream of advertising and political propaganda. I can seek those things out on my own if I want them.

Expectations for what software should be able to do were quite a bit lower in the 80s too :) I started learning to code as a kid in the 80s on 8-bit machines. Seemed like there was rapid progress in the availability of CPU power, RAM, etc.
