Interfaces you supply will necessarily constrain implementation details. So it winds up mattering. Passing a function to a function is a bunch of indirection and extra stack frames(!) compared to updating very small, memory aligned mutable

Which is still a very different statement from the way functional zealots would put it. Carmack's talking about pure functions at the architecture/design level. Within those functions, there's still lots of temporary mutable

Given how much of the job is based on resourcefulness and 'sticktoitiveness' which wind up being completely unmeasured by the typical big-o-whiteboard-olympics.. I wonder if it wouldn't be an edge in hiring to fast-track any

I'm not sure what the boundary is for "life-affecting", if you're talking about loan origination or anything, then like you said, there's already a boatload of regulations there. For marketing optimization, FWIW, my

What is it with hacker news commenters and assuming other people don't know things? The comment I was responding to was talking about training sets, I riffed on that. Depending on your definition of "full explanatory power",

Which then violates the other N-1 people's privacy, right? Why should Guilliame get access to Wilhelm or Guillermo's data? I bet this conundrum never crossed the minds of any of the people writing the regulation.

I've tried lots of languages, thanks. It's still astonishing and will always be astonishing. WTF does "timesRepeat" have to do with what an integer represents? Nothing, that's what. Integer is a noun, conventiona

That depends on the language, I love flatMap, but I never want to see functions attached to the integer type. Just stop with that :) Principle of least astonishment and all.

Agree with all of that. My hatred of extreme DRY is due to having been burned by premature/poor abstraction so many times. Also, there are even exceptions to that rule.. I've seen a number of cases, let's say you've go

Like I said, it's a judgment call on a case by case basis. Taking 'DRY' to an extreme leads to an overly self-coupled code base, taking decoupling to an extreme leads to the need to apply the same fix in multiple places.

So then you make all your nice pretty abstractions, and something comes from the business where it needs to be different in some wacky pathological case. Now your abstractions suck. Duplication leaves you room for that messy business logic

Learning the radicals does allow a certain amount of 'chunking' and makes things easier, but it's by no means a consistent system like an alphabet. Sometimes one radical is sound and another is meaning, sometimes neither, so

Just use Maven. It will be the lowest maintenance cost over time for your project. Nothing else matters, it's a frickin build system -- get it working and move on.
